This film is a classic comedy, and suitable for most of the family. Made in 1992, the film is shown on TV fairly regularly, so I have seen it countless times now, but I think it is one of those movies that you can watch time and time again.

Dolores Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg) is a cabaret singer in Reno, Nevada and is dating Vinny (Harvey Keitel), a married casino boss and gangster. When Vinny and Dolores have an argument, Vinny gives Dolores a fur coat as a peace offering. When Dolores realises that the coat actually belongs to his wife, she is furious and storms up to his office to tell him it's over. When she gets there however, she is in for a shock, as she witnesses Vinny and his cronies murder a man.
Dolores runs to the police, aware that Vinny and his men are on her trail. Lieutenant Souther (Bill Nunn) reveals to Dolores just how dangerous her boyfriend is, and tells her she must go to a safe house until the trial date in order to stay alive. When they arrive at the 'safe house', Lt Souther informs Dolores that it is actually a convent. She is furious about this, and so is the Mother Superior (Maggie Smith). Eventually Dolores relents as she realises staying there is the only way she can stay safe. The Mother Superior however, takes longer to warm to the idea, and is very strict with Dolores. She forces her to wear a habit and informs her that her new name will be Sister Mary Clarence.
At first Dolores is miserable with her new life as a nun and regularly gets into conflict with the Mother Superior, but things improve slightly when she gets to know a few of the other nuns in the convent - the shy Sister Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena) and the larger than life Sister Mary Patrick (Kathy Najimy). Dolores is then given the job of directing the church choir, which are terribly out of tune. Can Dolores help the choir? And will Vinny ever track her down?

This film is a classic comedy, and suitable for most of the family. Made in 1992, the film is shown on TV fairly regularly, so I have seen it countless times now, but I think it is one of those movies that you can watch time and time again.
The storyline is pretty simple, and I think the outcome is pretty obvious. There aren't really many twists or turns to the story, and I think perhaps it would have been a bit better if a bit more suspense had been created - for example, the fact the Vinny was on Dolores' trail could have been heightened a bit, but overall the film is still enjoyable to watch.
The film combines comedy with music -although it is by no means a musical - but the uplifting songs make for a real feel good film, and Wendy Makkena's voice is fantastic.
The acting is great throughout - Whoopi Goldberg tends to play a lot of larger than life characters, who are pretty similar (think Oda Mae Brown in Ghost), but she still manages to bring a special quality to the character of Dolores. I think the whole 'fish out of water' scenario always makes for great comedy, and luckily Whoopi Goldberg pulls it off brilliantly.

~Conclusion~
This is an enjoyable film, which is suitable for the whole family. It's consistently funny, and although it might not have the best plot ever, I would still recommend it.

...the casino-owner; Kathy Najimy as Sister Mary Patrick; and veteran actress Mary Wickes as Sister Mary Lazarus. The ensemble cast is well assembled and well choreographed; the musical numbers and transition from convent decorum to rock-n-roll gospel is very natural for this group.
A happy ending is assured, as indeed is a sequel, with yet more nunnery nonsense. ...

...film and DVD review of Sister Act.
Sister Act stars the wonderfully hilarious Whoopi Goldberg. I love Whoopi, and I think she is such a fantastic actress. All the other actresses in the film are equally fantastic, and the whole cast together really do make the film what it is. The other actresses include the hugely talented Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, Mary Wickes, and the hilarious Harvey Keitel as the bad guy.
Whoopi Goldberg plays the nightclub/cabaret ... ...in the form of Sister Mary Robert, a shy young nun with a wonderful voice.
Soon, the choir are drawing in huge crowds to the church at their services, with funky versions of hymns. The priests loves it, but the Mother Superior doesn't think the songs are appropriate. Soon however, Delores' undercover home is uncovered by a corrupt cop telling Vince where Delores is hiding out. Delores goes on the run, leaving Mother Superior to explain to the nuns ...

Sister Act is a fun movie starring Whoopi Goldberg! 1992, 100 mind run time approx, rating PG. The Story:
Whoopi Goldberg plays a club lounge singer called Doloris who is used to a life full of sin until one day she is the witness to a murder and is sent to hide undercover as a nun! From then on she is to be called Sister Mary Clarence, needless to say she is not happy about the situation but then again neither is the Mother Superior (Maggie Smith). ... ...singers and full of character, Sister Mary Patrick (Kathy Najimy) In particular is great fun and always up beat with a happy attitude and Sister Mary Roberts (Wendy Makkena) although she appears to be a shy girl when pushed to open her mouth and sing stuns everyone with the most amazing sound. ...spectrum of the cinema market, Sister Act (the original film) is a delightful comedy, which caters for the cinematic wants of the whole family. It is really a film that mum and dad will laugh at the adult jokes, remember the great Motowm melodies, the children will enjoy the slapstick and funny escapades of a load of nuns, and the whole family will be seduced by the wonderful choral music, updated to appeal to our senses, to marvellous effect.

She sticks out like a sore thumb, as well the mother superior can see. In order to keep order, the mother superior suggests Delores join the choir, much to Delores distain. The Choir consists of perhaps all tone death nuns ever to grace public television. Their attempts a bringin people into the glory ...

This film is an unforgettable hit comedy. WHOOPI GOLDBERG stars as a sassy lounge singer, who is forced to hide out from the mob, after witnessing a murder. She is hidden in a place where nobody would ever think to look for her (A quiet little convent). Before long she turns the tone-deaf choir into a wonderful, soulful, swinging group of nuns. But their growing success brings too much attention and she is discovered. Captured and taken back to Las ...

I bought this film when I replaced my old SisterAct VHS with the DVD and found it was going to cost me £5 to purchase the SisterActDVD on its own or £6 to purchase it in a pack with SisterAct 2. I'm glad however that I did purchase this film as I really enjoyed watching it and have since watched it a couple more times.
This film sees Delores Van Cartier back in the habit once again. This time after her convent friends come to visit her at one of her shows to request her help. The sisters of St Katherine's are now teachers at a school full of rather unruly children. Reluctantly Delores agrees to return to her position as Sister Mary Clarence and promises to try her best.
The class she is given, the music class, however prove far more difficult that she could ever have imagined. The class is full of very strong-headed and often ...
SisterAct 2 is the sequel to the comedy hit SisterAct, and Whoopi Goldberg returns as the unlikeliest nun you're ever seen. This time she's here to help the nuns to run her old school, St Catherine's Catholic High. The first problem she faces is the usual one, unreceptive children who want a "bird" course. The bigger problem is the impending closure of the school, which threatens the life of the whole community.
Whoopi to the rescue indeed.
Upon discovering that her unresponsive music class can actually sing, rather well as it happens, Dolores, in her disguise as Sister Mary Clarence (like in the Mod Squad), resolves to turn them into a choir. They are understandably reluctant, but find that it's not as bad as they thought. As in SisterAct, she helps the students to discover who they really are and make the most of their gifts ...
Advantages: funny, slick, memorable, a good family film Disadvantages: None
SisterAct 2 is a great sequel to the brilliant first film SisterAct. Not often does a sequel match the first film for brilliance but this film certainly passes the grade. Starring Whoopie Goldberg as a nun is enough to make you laugh in the first place. This excellent movie guarantees laughter throughout and is highly recommended by me. It is one of many films on my video shelf.
The story line is easy to follow and the acting is great. A memorable soundtrack with some excellent songs. All in all it is a memorable film which comes highly recommended. ...

"...Sidesplittingly funny....It's a new-style feel-good movie...Goldberg's voice -- a flat, gravelly drone of skepticism -- is a great comic instrument..." (Entertainment Weekly, p.46-7, 29/05/1992)
"...Graced with a clever script, a cast that will make you smile until you ache, and a snappy sense of pace....[It is] one of those rare occasions where everything almost magically falls into place..." (Los Angeles Times, p.F1, 29/05/1992)
On-the-run after witnessing her Las Vegas mobster boyfriend kill someone, a tacky lounge singer (Whoopi Goldberg) enters the Witness Protection Program - as a nun. Now the convent needs protection, from the new Sister Mary Clarence and her Vegas-style ideas on how to run the choir. A charming comedy and one of Goldberg's best movies.
