I have to say that this film has to be the best musical film of all time, with its classic songs and amazing dances, you just cant go wrong!! I "got into" this film when i was about 7 or 8 and after my cartoons on a cable channel they would always show old films and it was quite often Singin in the rain. I took an instant like to it because of its simple, and easy to follow story line which has a brilliant happy ending!
The basic plot is........ Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont are a famous silent movie acting duo. The start of the film shows you how Don and his best friend Cosmo Brown (who plays the music for the silent movies don stars in) made their slightly unusual and funny rise to the cinema screen. The whole film then follows the start of the "talking picture" revolution and shows the difficulties that studios and actors faced when making the transition from silent fils to talking films. Lina has an "interesting" speaking and singing voice, which when making a musical can be a problem, and so Don along with Cosmo and his new female "friend" (played by Debbie Reynolds) must come up ith a plan to disguise linas voice so that their film will be a success and the "Lockwood and Lamonnt" name can continue to be sucessful. This plan ends up with Linas total embarassment and a fantastic happy ending! Im sorry if this is quite vague, but i didnt want to give the whole plot away, just thought i would give you all a little taster of what the film is about!!!
Obviously, it wouldnt be a musical without the songs, and boy has it got some belters! The title track "Singin' in the rain", is a legend in itself and the amazing dance and vocal skills of gene kelly are shown in all their full glory. "Moses Supposes" (TRY SAYING THAT WHEN YOU HAVE HAD A FEW TOO MANY TO DRINK!?) although doesnt have much vocal in it, shows off the dancing talents of Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor (who plays Cosmo) to amazing effect. It will leave you in complete awe at the fact that 2 men can dance so gracefully and so amazingly well! "Good Morning" shows off Debbie Reynolds dancing talents and shows that although the poor girl had never had a dance lesson in her life she was able to keep up with both Donald and Gene: Both proffesional dancers. The comical performance of "Make em laugh" by Donald O'Connor is brilliant and hilarious at the same time. The comic moves of being hit round the head with a plank of wood and having a fight with a manekin are brilliantly done, and just goes to prove that its the simple comedy that will always remain funny. There are abviously many more songs than this, but these are the ones which inm my opinion are outstanding!
The performances by all the main charecters are brilliant, I just think it is a shame that in 2005 we dont have any film stars who can act, dance and sing quite as fantastically as gene, donald and debbie could on this film.
The Special eddition comes with a bonus DVD with some good features. It takes a look back at all the previous musicals to Singin in the rain and shows the uprising of the Musical Filmstar. It also shows where the songs featured in Singin in the rain originally came from and how they were chosen. There are also interviews with Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds about the process of making the film itself. Overall the Bonus DVD is very good and the section with the different musicals is very good at "Wetting your appetite" for some of them, making you want to go out and buy or rent some of the others to watch!
As you can probably guess...ILOVE THIS FILM, and think that anyone who has a bad word to say about it is vry very very daft!!!!!
"Im singin' in the rain, just singin' in the rain, what a glorious feelin', im happy again...............................!"
