sound, remains one of the most joyous and beloved of all film musicals. Not only a classic example of the MGM musical at its highly polished best,Singing' in the Rainis also a lasting tribute to the incredible talent of star and co-director, Gene Kelly. Deftly tailored around a selection of perky, likeable songs written during the period by Nacio Herb Brown and the film's creative producer Arthur Freed, the amusing plot inspired a dazzling array of stylish dance routines; none more famous, of course, than Kelly's now legendary, wonderfully carefree frolic in the rain. With bright-eyed support from a young Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor (whose madcap "Make 'em laugh" is another of the film's enduring highlights), plus the terrific MGM studio orchestra, this set of the entire score, complete with several out-takes, is guaranteed to chase the blues away. --Robert Seeley

science fiction spectaculars, the studios of Southern California (and particularly Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) were renowned for a uniquely American (and nearly extinct) kind of picture known as The Musical. Indeed, when Sight & Sound conducts its international critics poll in the second year of every decade, this 1952 MGM picture is the American musical that consistently ranks among the 10 best movies ever made. It's not only a great song-and-dance piece starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and a sprightly Debbie Reynolds; it's also an affectionately funny insider spoof about the film industry's uneasy transition from silent pictures to "talkies". Kelly plays debonair star Don Lockwood, whose leading lady Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) has a screechy voice hilariously ill-suited to the new technology (and her glamorous screen image). Among the musical highlights: O'Connor's knockout "Make 'Em Laugh"; the big "Broadway Melody" production number; and, best of all, that charming little title ditty in which Kelly makes movie magic on a drenched set with nothing but a few puddles, a lamppost, and an umbrella. --Jim Emerson

Advantages: Show stopping fun fun fun! Disadvantages: what disadvantages?
Singin' in the rain is a fabulous homage to the silent film era and the begining of "Talkies". Gene Kelly not only acts but co-directs this MGM production! With a major imput in the dancing, Kelly shows off his signture style especially in his key performance of 'Singin' in the Rain'.
The story is set at a time when silent films are making way for talking pictures. This proves to be too much for some of the silent movie stars turning melodrama to ... ...spectacle charting the rise of Lockward and Lemont, sweethearts of the silver screen. Privately the pair are constantly at logger heads, a situation not helped when a young aspiring actress Kathy Selden literally bursts into their lives! Lockward is helped through his troubles by his best friend Cosmo, (Donald O'connor). O'Connor is a comic genius so much so that i'm always looking for other films he has stared in but have only found another staring ...

DVD Description
"Just about the best Hollywood musical of all time," wrote Pauline Kael about SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. After years of honing his skills on the vaudeville stage, hoofer Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has finally reached the top and become a swashbuckling star of the silent silver screen. Then the self-satisfied celebrity has his confidence shattered when ingenue Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) dismisses film actors as "shadows" without substance. After getting over the insult, he falls hard for her--much to the consternation of his costar, the sexy, selfish Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who wants Don all to herself. But Don has career troubles too. The wild popularity of THE JAZZ SINGER has studios scrambling to change from silent films to talkies, and Lina's shrill voice and Don's stiff acting left the preview audience roaring with laughter. There's only one way to save the movie and their careers: turn THE DUELLING CAVALIER into a musical, with Kathy secretly dubbing in Lina's lines and songs. But can they hide the truth from Lina
