in the Rain is extraordinarily exuberant, always youthful and joyously indestructible (Vincent Canby, The New York Times). Starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds, and featuring unforgettable song and dance classics like Singin' in the Rain, Make 'Em Laugh and All I Do is Dream of You, it has just about everything you could ask for in a movie musical (Saturday Review). Set in Hollywood in the roaring 20s, co-starring Jean Hagen and the incomparable Cyd Charisse, and featuring a spectacular, 12-minute Broadway Ballet finale, it is indisputably, the most enjoyable of all American movie musicals (Pauline Kael).

sound, remains one of the most joyous and beloved of all film musicals. Not only a classic example of the MGM musical at its highly polished best, Singing' in the Rain is also a lasting tribute to the incredible talent of star and co-director, Gene Kelly. Deftly tailored around a selection of perky, likeable songs written during the period by Nacio Herb Brown and the film's creative producer Arthur Freed, the amusing plot inspired a dazzling array of stylish dance routines; none more famous, of course, than Kelly's now legendary, wonderfully carefree frolic in the rain. With bright-eyed support from a young Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor (whose madcap "Make 'em laugh" is another of the film's enduring highlights), plus the terrific MGM studio orchestra, this set of the entire score, complete with several out-takes, is guaranteed to chase the blues away. --Robert Seeley

Anyone that reads my reviews know by now that I love the musicals, especially the old ones. Gene Kelly has always been in my top five of dancers and he stars in this film, he is also one of the directors and one of the two choreographers, so a very busy man.
That classic scene where Gene Kelly dances along the street in the rain with his umbrella, singing the title song 'Singin' in the Rain' has been copied and replayed by many over the years, is still one of my favourite scenes.
The main stars of the show are: -
Gene Kelly playing Don Lockwood Debbie Reynolds playing Kathy Seldon Donald O'Connor playing Cosmo Brown Jean Hagen playing Lina Lamont.
Directors: Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen Lyrics: Arthur Freed Choreography: Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen.
The film is set n the roaring 20's and as the opening credits roll, your mood is being uplifted with the joyous sounds of 'Singin' in the Rain' being played in the background. The movie starts outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, the year is 1927. The Radio announcer is covering the opening on the swashbuckling movie starring Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont. Whilst Dora Bailey interviews Don Lockwood his old song and dance partner Cosmo Brown listens in as Don gives us a rendition of his rise to fame, the show gives us flashes to their old vauderville act and the shows first song 'Fit as a Fiddle'
The story goes on and we get introduced to our other main character Kathy Sheldon. As the story unravels with comedy and song it takes us through some slapstick comedy scenes as they try to make a swashbuckling silent movie into a talking movie, then into a musical. Oh and not forgetting the love story as well, no classic Hollywood musical could be without a little romance.
~~ The Characters ~~
Don Lockwood - was a song and dance man from a vauderville act, gone on to be a romantic silent movie star. At the start of the movie Don appears a little cocky and sure of himself, you see him grow and change throughout the film.
Kathy Seldon - is just starting out in her acting career, starts the show doing one of her jobs as a chorus girl jumping out of a cake and going in to song and dance.
Cosmo Brown - a very funny man he brings all the fun and vigour into the movie, you can't help but smile and laugh with him.
Lina Lamont - Don't let her looks deceive you, even with her silly squeaky voice, she has a cold hard heart in the film.
~~ The Songs ~~
Fit As A Fiddle - already mentioned at the beginning of the movie - a fun song - (Don and Cosmo)
All I Do Is Dream Of You - a song that introduces us to kathy's singing and dancing skills
Make 'Em Laugh - a fantastic fun song done by Cosmo Brown, (do you remember The Full Monty where he tried to walk the wall), well the walk the wall scene is included in this song.
Beautiful Girl - this was played to movie clips, during discussions about going into talking movies.
You Were Meant For Me - a romantic song performed by Don Lockwood.
Moses - another fun song performed by Don and Cosmo
Good Mornin' - I loved this song as a child, it is a lively fun song, performed by all three, Don, Cosmo and Kathy.
Singin' In The Rain - well what can I say a true classic, which is possibly the most well know song from a musical and what most people remember Gene Kelly for.
Would You? - This is a song that they have put in the new movie that they are making, you will have to watch the film to find out who sings this one?
Broadway Melody - Don Lockwood and Dancers, what Gene Kelly does best is a fantastic Dance sequence.
You Are My Lucky Star - finally a love song, again I am trying not to give it all away so watch the movie
~~ Show Trivia ~~
This was Debbie Reynolds first dancing role. Even though Debbie had a No 1 hit single from the musical 'Abba Dabba Honeymoon', Kelly still had her voice dubbed by Betty Noyes on You Are My Lucky Star and Would You.
Kelly gave Debbie a hard time on the set, when she was took on for the park she could not dance, but she practiced for 8 hrs every day to achieve her goal, and even managed to impress the hard task master Gene Kelly with her determination.
They added milk to the water for the Rain in the title track 'Singin' In The Rain' to make the rain show up on the camera.
~~ DVD Extras ~~
Well apart from scene selection and languages there are no extras.
Scene Selections - as normal this is done in blocks 1-24/ 25-48/ 49-60, and you just move your arrow around the screen to the scene you want to watch again.
Languages - soundtracks are available in English, French and Italian.
Subtitles: Available in 12 Languages.
~~ My Opinion ~~
This is a great family film, you can spend just over 1.5 hours watching the story unfold, with a touch of romance, lots of laughter, song and dance.
Personally I love the film. Gene Kelly is a fantastic dancer, he has a kind of rugged yet sexy way about him, which was quite different from the swarve and sophistication of Fred Astaire. I admit I am a Gene Kelly fan and over the years I have possibly watched all his movies time and time again. But the slapstick fun of Singin' in the Rain gives it a special place in my heart.
My only real gripe is that there are no DVD extra's, no behind the scenes stories, no chats with the characters. Since doing reviews on films I have come to enjoy watching the extra's as well as the movies.

Singin' In the Rain (1952)
103 Minutes
Dir: Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly.
Starring: Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen
I should've subtitled this 'I don't like musicals, but'
As a rule, I'd give most films where the lead bursts into song a wide berth. For me, a film is credible (and therefore enjoyable) if you can believe in what is unfolding on the screen. How can you suspend belief if the actors suddenly start singing Cole ... ...instance my girlfriend cajoled me to watching 'Rent'. Don't get me wrong: it's worthy, serious stuff, but I had to turn it off after five minutes.
Personally, I am no musicals expert. Wouldn't be able to be analyse one on technical details alone. However, if a musical entertains me (like Mamma Mia did), it gets my seal of approval and I'd watch it repeatedly.
'Singin' In The Rain' certainly fits the bill. Even a philistine like me can enjoy the ...

For this rainy Easter afternoon may I propose you a little musical journey? Close your eyes and listen to the sound of the rain beating on the ground, a sound of steps ring on the wet pavement. Suddenly a man appears and you think What a peculiar guy!, as he’s singing and dancing in the rain.
Most people could believe he is a suicidal mad guy (there’s indeed a certain chance to get a pneumonia if you stay out with such a weather) but suddenly you ... ...a kid you used to love walking in the rain puddle pools but unfortunately (and curiously) your mother constantly forbid you to do so.
However you’re now free to make your joy pop up in front of the whole world so DANCE now! DANCE!
I’m obviously evoking the movie “Singin’in the rain”. This American movie was made in 1952 by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen. In the Hollywood of the thirties this musical illustrate the adaptation of the world of cinema ...

This 1952 musical sees some of Hollyood's biggest stars come together in one of the best musicals of all time!
Gene Kelly stars as Don Lockwood who is a big star of the silver screen. The film is set in the time of silent films but all this is about to change. 'Talkies' are about to become common place!
It is decided that the Duelling Cavellier should become a Musical so that it will be a huge success. However, a big problem arises when they hear ... ...sing. She sounds TERRIBLE!! There is only one solution, Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) will have to do a voice over. However, Kathy apparently can't stand Don and so it takes some convincing to get her to do it. They have to keep this a secret from Lina as she thinks she is fabulous and would never agree to do it! This is a fabulous musical - full of comedy, romance, songs and mishaps. The most famous scene is obviously when Gene Kelly sings Singin ...

Advantages: A really relaxing good old fashioned classic. Disadvantages: Looks very aged and some corny jokes.
To me Singing in the rain was a really good clean musical, the songs were so understandable eg. morals. I first watched this film about 30 years ago, the main cast were Gene Kelly, Donald O`connor, Debbie Renolds who all played there parts to perfection. The story was about a singing girl(Debbie)and her two friends (gene & Don). They were looking for work in films(musicals), eventually Debbie gets a job as a voiceover of an actress with a terrible ... ...become tense. There is plenty of twists and turns and light hearted comedy that keeps it sweet till the very end. This film was and still is a film you can watch again and again, for any age, certainly a sunday afternooner. When alls said and done the main winner of Singin in the Rain is the music, each song tells the story from songs of saddness to songs of happiness. I will finish with saying I loved this film and always will.(I have it on DVD ...

will always remain funny. There are abviously many more songs than this, but these are the ones which inm my opinion are outstanding!
The performances by all the main charecters are brilliant, I just think it is a shame that in 2005 we dont have any film stars who can act, dance and sing quite as fantastically as gene, donald and debbie could on this film.
The Special eddition comes with a bonus DVD with some good features. It takes a look back at all the previous musicals to Singinin the rain and shows the uprising of the Musical Filmstar. It also shows where the songs featured inSinginin the rain originally came from and how they were chosen. Advantages: lovely family film Disadvantages: none
I love the old Hollywood musicals and none more so than Singin' in the Rain starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds. This lovely film has got it all - romance, comedy and lots of great singing and dancing along with a couple of downpours for good measure! I recently received the DVD of this film for my birthday and the other day we all sat down as a family to watch this great film. Even my four year old daughter really enjoyed it!
Singin' in the Rain (made in 1952) steps back in time to the advent of 'talking films. Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) are big silent movie stars. However, when the movie production company starts to make talking pictures there is a big problem because it soon transpires that Lina's voice is terrible. No one knows what to do about this until Don meets the beautiful Cathy ...
