little connection to the original fables from theArabian Nights, but it's an entertaining romp none the less. Sinbad (voiced by the midwest vowels of Brad Pitt) gets commissioned by the wicked goddess Eris (Michelle Pfeiffer) to steal a magical book called the Book of Peace from the city of Syracuse--but the prince of Syracuse turns out to be a childhood friend of Sinbad's. So Eris steals the book herself and frames Sinbad, making the hero sail to the edge of the world to get it back, accompanied by Marina (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a woman he's secretly loved for years. The movie skilfully blends hand-drawn and computer images. The storyline is surprisingly well-constructed and actually has some thoughts about friendship and personal fibre, while providing all the swashbuckling, derring-do and cliffhangers the audience could want. --Bret Fetzer

The story got going pretty quickly and the animation was very smooth and modern looking. The story is about the main charactor Sinbad, and Eris, the evil goddess who asks (well Ok, orders!) Sinbad to steal the 'book of secrets' from a place called Syracuse. Sinbad sets off there but the prince of this place turns out to be an old friend of Sinbads.
Eris steals the book herself, she wanted to get Sinbad to go to Syracuse so that she could frame him. He is arrested and sentanced to death. His old friend, the prince, believes Sinbads account that Eris has stolen and taken the book to her kingdom at the end of the Earth and asks the guards to free Sinbad and let him die instead if Sinbad does not come back with the book of secrets in 10 days. He trusts Sinbad to do so.
Sinbad sets off on his journey and is joined by Marina, the princes love, but one that Sinbad has always secretly loved also. He also has a loveable crew including a cute dog. They have many challenges and dangers ahead.
The rest of the story involves their adventures at sea. Will Sinbad get the book back, will he selfishly flee, or will he be true to his word? I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it!
Included in the animations (some drawn and some computer generated) are great scenes of monsters, a wonderful mermaid sequence and there are some very funny jokes aimed at parents or adults watching.
The film wasn't scary to my 3 year olds (it could be for some though due to monsters and bad mermaids!), they really enjoyed it and kept up with it right up until the end, a rare occurance at times!
The actors fit very well with the film and the soundtrack is an asset to the film. There are some extras on the DVD including 'the making of Sinbad' which is well worth a watch.
My husband and I really enjoyed it and felt it is one of the stronger animated films of recent years. I highly recommend it.
Sinbad is framed for stealing the legendary Book of Peace by the goddess Eris. To prove his innocence Sinbad must travel to the end of the world and retrieve the book.

DVD Description
This rousing spectacle from Dreamworks follows Sinbad (Brad Pitt) and his band of pirates, who rob and pilfer their way through ancient times. Naturally this rogue will be redeemed, and the wheels go into motion when the Book of Peace, a hot property guarded by his good friend Proteus (Joseph Fiennes) and wanted by Eris, the evil goddess of chaos (Michelle Pfeiffer), winds up stolen. Sinbad is sent on a journey to return the book to its rightful owner, which means sailing to the uncharted waters of Eris' kingdom, through oceans laden with monsters and dangers at every turn. Stowing away for the ride is Proteus' beautiful and feisty fiancee Marina (Catherine Zeta Jones). Her presence allows for plenty of bickering and tortured romance in between the suspense and action-packed set pieces, which involve (among other things) tentacled sea serpents, sharks, and ghostly sirens. The animation is stunning: CGI effects merge with conventional 2D animation for ravishing, almost 3D results. Pfeiffer has fun hamming to heights not seen since she played Cat Woman in BATMAN RETURNS, and adults will definitely relish the smidgeon more sensuality and violence than usual. The clever script by John Logan (GLADIATOR) provides such a wealth of jaw-dropping spectacle, cathartic action, and cheeky humour that the whole family should find SINBAD a fun voyage.
