This Simpsons DVD is do with money and glamour, and contains four episodes; Homie The Clown from season six, Springfield from season five, Viva Ned Flanders from season ten and Homer at the Bat from season three. For me Homer at the Bat is the best episode on the DVD, although Homie The Clown is also very good. The most recent episode, Viva Ned Flanders, is one of the better episodes from season ten, where we get our first glimpse of Ned Flanders acting less then saintly.
'Homie The Clown' sees Homer enrol at the Krusty the Clown college. After driving to work, Homer becomes infatuated with an advertisement to join a Clown College. After becoming a clown, Homer becomes tired of the way he is treated by kids and adults alike, and ponders whether to quit. However, after he is let off a speeding ticket because he looks like Krusty The Clown, Homer decides to exploit his new found fame. The jokes come thick and fast in this episode, particularly at the start of the episode where Homer can't get the idea of the Clown College out of his head. This episode is also memorable for the loop the loop trick that Homer repeatedly fails to do. All in all a great episode from the very good season six catalogue.
'$pringfield' is the story of Mr Burns opening a casino in the heart of Springfield, which sees the whole family affected. After the casino is opened, Marge becomes addicted to gambling, Homer gets a job working at the casino, Bart decides to open a casino for kids while Lisa must design a school costume without the help of her mum, who's now spending days on end at the casino. Mr Burns slow descent into madness is the highlight of the episode, as is Marge's addiction to gambling, which goes to such an extent that she loses her baby. I also loved the very cute sequence between Marge and Homer at the end, where Homer is trying to get Marge to admit that she has a gambling problem.
'Viva Ned Flanders' tells the story of Homer and Ned's trip to Las Vegas. Homer sees Ned as something of a bore, and decides to teach him how to have fun. After a number of disastrous exercises, Homer decides to take Ned to Las Vegas, where they accidentally manage to get married after becoming seriously intoxicated. The best part of this episode is actually not the stuff in Las Vegas, but the parts at the start of the episode where Homer is trying to teach Ned to have fun. The sequence involving Homer trying to cook sausages on the roof of his house is very funny. Season ten of the Simpsons contains some good episodes and some not so good episodes, with Viva Ned Flanders being one of the better ones.
Finally, 'Homer at the Bat', tells the story of Mr Burns forming a baseball team and attempting to beat the Springfield Isotopes so that he can win a bet. So that he can guarantee winning, Mr Burns decides to replace his nuclear baseball team, including Homer, with major league stars such as Daryl Strawberry and Roger Clemence. However, each of the major league stars is involved in a mysterious incident, which means that it up to Homer and his co-workers to save the day. This episode is the funniest of the lot, containing so many laugh out loud moments, including Roger Clemence clucking like a chicken and Steve Sax's run in with the police. This is definately one of the finest episodes of the Simpsons, because it's packed with so many great moments, and so many great guest stars. The end credits, containing a Softball song, is also brilliant.
All in all this is another great DVD, although another couple of episodes could have added on. The earlier episodes such as Homer at the Bat, Homie the Clown and Springfield are brilliant, while Viva Ned Flanders is also good. Recommended.
