This is a video containing four great episodes from the hit cartoon series, The Simpsons! The episodes have a great mix of story lines. The four episodes are Homie the Clown, $pringfield (or How I Learnt to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gamblin), Homer at the Bat and Viva Ned Flanders. Here is a review of each of episodes and my opinion on this video as a whole.
Here are the lists of episodes with information about the story lines, original air dates, writers and directors of each of the episodes and my personal opinion on each. There are in order of how they appear on the video. They act as a memory refresher to those of you who have seen them and a taster for those of you who haven't.
[2F12] - Homer the Clown Original Air Date: 12 Feb 95 Written By: John Swartzwelder Directed By: Mark Kirland Special Guests: Dick Cavett and Johnny Unitas Story Line: Krusty's luck has run out, the mafia are after him. Homer has enrolled at clown school and has to pretend to be Krusty. My opinion: This is a memorable episode
and a really funny one. One of the best parts is when you see the Simpsons family, as they would look if they were true to life. It's funny to find out that Homer looks exactly like Krusty the Klown without the hair or make-up. The special guests are better known in American then in Britain.
[1F08] - $pringfield (or How I Learnt to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gamblin) Original Air Date: 16 Dec 93 Written By: Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein Directed By: Wes Archer Story Line: Mayor Quimby legalises gambling, so Mr Burns opens a casino and Marge develops a gambling problem. Special Guest: Gerry Cooney and Robert Goulet
My opinion: This episode is from the 5th season of the Simpsons and we get to see that Marge has got a darker side! Once again, the special guests featured in this episode are recognisable but better known in the United States.
[AABF06] - Viva Ned Flanders Original Air Date: 10 Jan 99 Written By: David M. Stern Directed By: Neil Affleck Special Guests: The Moody Blues Story Line: Ned is left feeling that he is boring and so predictable and needs to help of Homer to start enjoying life. Homer takes Ned to Las Vegas where they end up getting married, again.
My Opinion: This an episode from the 10th season of the Simpsons and when I first received this episode it was one that hadn't yet been aired on BBC2, so it was nice to see an episode that I hadn't previously seen. This episode introduces characters that make return appearances later on in episodes of the Simpsons. Some great moments in this episode, but it's not one of my favourites.
[8F13] - Homer at the Bat Original Air Date: 20 Feb 92 Written By: John Swartzwelder Directed By: Jim Reardon Special Guest: Jon Lovitz (Aristotle Amadopolis), Wade Boggs , Jose Canseco, Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey, Jr., Don Mattingly, Steve Sax, Mike Scioscia, Ozzie Smith, Darryl Strawberry and Terry Cashman Story Line: Homer is on a winning streak as captain of the power plant baseball team, The Springfield Atoms. Mr Burns gets hungry for victory and replaces the power plant worker-players with an all star players team. The new players have some bizarre accidents.
My Opinion: This is a classic episode, and has a massive special guest appearance line-up. The special guests are baseball players, and I'm not really up on baseball stars but I do recognise the names and I know that are some of the big names, showing that the Simpsons is very popular (but, you already knew that).
Conclusion This is a great video, and one that any Simpsons fan should own. The video has lots of advertisements at the beginning, as do a lot of other videos, but the episodes are great. You've most probably seen them aired on television, but it is good to be able to watch the episodes again and again (my little brother does, he loves watching them before going to bed).
I was receiving the Simpsons videos from a video club that sent them when they were first released, and was paying around £14.99, this was before DVD's became popular! You can buy this new for under £5 and I have seen them on e-bay selling at £1, they are second hand, but a bargain!
You have got to be fan of the Simpsons to appreciate this video and videos in the collection. Because the episodes on this video are from later seasons, they are not going to be available on a DVD box set for a few years. So, if you like the episodes that I have mentioned above, this video is for you!
