The Simpsons - Classics - Springfield Murder Mysteries is a compilation of Simpsons episodes with a recurring theme. The theme for this DVD is murder, so expect some black comedy. Episodes included are "Who Shot Mr. Burns?", "Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part 2)", "Black Widower" and "Cape Feare".
"Who Shot Mr. Burns?" is the first and, so far, the only Simpsons episode to be split into two parts. It deals with Mr. Burns, who steals oil right from underneath Springfield Elementary, which in turn destroys the retirement home and closes down various business (including Moe's bar). To cap it all off, he decides to block out the sun, so the town will use more of his electricity. Suddenly there's a bang, and Burns slumps down on the sundial. Who did it?
As this was the end of the sixth season and the beginning of the seventh, there was a long gap before you found out what happened. There was intense speculation about what happened, and this only increased the popularity of the show. There was even a "Springfield's Most Wanted" show looking at various suspects. This was well handled and deftly executed, if you'll pardon the pun. They kept you guessing until the last possible moment, two great episodes full of mystery.
"Black Widower" has Selma wedding her pen pal who is in prison. He also happens to be Sideshow Bob, who Bart sent to prison when he tried to frame Krusty for armed robbery. Bart thinks something is fishy, but can he save the day before Sideshow Bob completes his plan, or is it all in his head? This is a deliciously devilish episode, almost Hitchcockian in it's premise. Probably one of the best written episodes ever, it's funny but also has a very dark tone.
"Cape Feare" is one of the most well known of the Simpsons episodes and again features Sideshow Bob. He starts sending Bart threatening letters so the whole family enters the witness protection program and move to a new town. But Bob is resilient, and soon finds the Simpsons, will he carry out his threat or will Bart save the day, and himself? Kelsey Grammer once again excels as Sideshow Bob, balancing menace with a sophisticated side. Full of memorable moments, this is an episode you can visit again and again and not get bored. I don't think anyone will forget Bob singing the entire score of HMS Pinafore, or standing on rake after rake after rake, all met with the same response "Nuuurrgghh". That particular scene goes on for what seems like forever, becoming funny, then repetitive, then funny again. It's a testament to the writers that they would try something that seems very daring, to have such a extended scene like that, but they pull it off superbly.
No extras which is a disappointment considering the amount you get in the season box sets, and it's not like these are much cheaper either. My advice is to buy a whole season, there's so many gems it'll be well worth the money.
