I love movies. just love to see my favourites again and again. Silsila is one in that category. I specially like romantic musical love story by director Yash Chopra who has given a fresh concept of romance to Hindi movies.
Silsila is a 1981 Indian Bollywood film directed by Yash Chopra. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Jaya Bhaduri, Sanjeev Kumar and Rekha. The film is said to be based on Amitabh Bachchan's personal life as in late 70's and early 80's, the romance between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha was the most talked about news from Hindi film industry.
Story: Orphaned at very young ages, Two brothers Shekhar and Amit Malhotra (Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan) are survivors and lead independent lives with Shekhar being a Squadron Leader with the Indian Air Force, and Amit a struggling writer. While Shekhar has fallen in love with lovely Shobha (Jaya Bhaduri), Amit woos
an attractive Chandni (Rekha). Both brothers plan to marry together. But fate has something much worse in store for them when Shekhar is killed in a plane crash, leaving behind a pregnant and devastated Shobha. Taking pity on Shobha's plight, Amit marries her and writes to Chandni to forget him. This news breaks Chandni's heart, and she goes on to marry Dr. V.K. Anand (Sanjeev Kumar), who is very much in love with her.
Tragedy strikes once more, and Shobha loses her child in a car accident. With no child to tie them together, both drift apart, Amit meets Chandni and they secretly rekindle their romance. They meet on the sly, until one day when Chandni accidentally hits a passerby. The police get involved, but Amit manages to hush the matter up. But their secret meetings will no longer be secret anymore for the Police Inspector in charge of this accident is none other than Shobha's cousin, Kulbhushan, and he is determined to expose Amit's affair with Chandni. Various other instances also expose Amit's affair with Chandni. After exposure how they four examine their relationships and come out of this messy situation is shown in climax.
My opinion: I heard during my teenage about this film. Like this is the true story while it was shot. I was wondering how people be so balanced while shooting their own life story (thats why they are actors, we cant be ever). But after watching a film I became fan of Amitabh and Jaya as pair. They had acted very well specially Jaya Bhaduri, when you know your onscreen and offscreen husband has affair with opposite heroine how can you act so well!!
Best part of films are music, cinematography, Jaya Bhaduri and strong screenplay. Extramarital affair is handled very delicately here. My favourite scene is when Sanjeev Kumar told story to Jaya Bhaduri and explain how to save husband in such extramarital affairs.
Songs: Film start with a song sar se sarke sar ki chunariya... It is typical song sung by group of female in spring season. It is folk song and very different from the further story. Other songs are excellent. Dekha ek khwab to ye silsile.. was shoot in tulip farms of Netherland. I guess first time India audience has seen europe in such a beautiful way. Couple looked very romantic in between tulip farm. Other duet yeh kahan aa gaye ham.. is experimental song in my opinion. There are dialogues in between song. It is one of my favourite song ever. Sad song Neela Aasman.. has two version. One sung by Lata Mangeshkar and other by Amitabh Bachchan himself. One unforgetable song is Holi Song. Rang Barse bhige chunar wali.. is most popular Holi song from Hindi movies where Amitabh Bachchan flirted with Rekha. All songs are casted in nice lyrics and hit soundtracks.
