the silent era, the 55 minutes of Dans la Nuit find the French avant-garde clarinettist joined by Dominique Pifarely (violin), Vincent Courtois (cello), Jean-Louis Matinier (accordion) and Francois Merville (percussion, marimba). Long acclaimed as one of the most inventive and cogent improvisers working in Europe today, Sclavis has always shown a strong concern for tone colour, dynamics and poetic atmosphere in his work. These are factors central to Dans la Nuit, a release that shows a subtle awareness of both the dynamics of film narrative and period flavour, while also managing to sound completely contemporary in matters of harmony, colouristic detail and overall structure. The record is one of the most rhythmically compelling of the various releases that ECM has dedicated to music concerned with film, with plenty of Sclavis' trademark ostinato riffs to complement the more pensive, clarinet and cello-led passages, various (highly effective) marimba musings and the occasional overtly Gallic, accordion-sparked moment. --Michael Tucker

I'm sure Mel Brooks took a risk making this in the mid 70s...although I doubt it is classed as a geniune silent movie as there is one word of dialogue (and plenty of over the top sound effects!).
Brooks stars as Mel Funn a has-been ... ...in making the first silent film in 40 years. He finds a near bankrupt studio, who are willing to take the risk.
The movie continues as Mel and his 2 friends played by Dom DeLuise (how many Brooks movies is this guy in!) and Marty Feldman chase around Hollywood looking for stars for the movie. Brooks stars as Mel Funn a has-been producer who's trying to get a studio to be interested in making the first silent film in 40 years. He finds a near bankrupt studio, who are willing to take the risk.

Cue a series of bizarre encounters with the likes of Burt Reynolds, James Caan, Paul Newman, Liza Minnelli and Anne Bancroft. Most of these were big names back in the 70s when this was made so it shows the pulling power that Mel Brooks had back then.
There's a sub plot of another movie studio trying to stop the movie being made and screened but what really struck me about the movie is it's filled with plenty of slapstick. ....unfortunately it doesn't always seem to fit in with the movie.
But it is funny when you get bizarrie moments like when Dom & Marty suddenly break into a game of Pong on a heart monitor.
I enjoyed this movie but I am a big fan of Mel Brooks work...this movie alone is older than me! If you get a chance to watch this or buy it for a few pounds than do so. It's not a classic start to finish riot but it's certainly worth a look.
For those interested I'm reviewing the video copy.
Advantages: Effects Disadvantages: Confusing story
My son aged 11 and myself watched this movie last night not knowing what to expect as we had not heard of the game or really what the DVD was about.
I was ready to pack my son off to bed but never really felt the need and he was very pleased to survive to the end of the movie with only a few jumps and starts.
The story starts off with a daughter(Sharon) who is a bit messed up and a mother(Rose) who wants to help Sharon out of her illusions and nightmares. Rose ends up taking Sharon to Silent Hill which is a town that had been evacuated due to a coal fire beneath it. When they arrive at Silent Hill Sharon disappears and Rose has to look for her in silent hill. A policewoman gets involved and tries to help out. The policewoman does try to take Sharon out of the town, but they are cut off.
Every so often in the town a siren ...

The boys are sent to prison for making the own liquor during prohibition! The innocent boys end up in a cell with Tiger, the toughest prisoner ever to have lived, and Stan starts annoying him with his loose tooth which sounds like a raspberry every time he talks. Tiger offers to remove it for him ...
Advantages: One benefit of World War I Disadvantages: Bizarre casting you may not realise unless you know
in the above category then no silentmovie however well it is spoken of is going to interest you. Silentmovies are like watching modern day foreign films from Lithuania - very arty and sparse.
DVD FEATURES:
Depends on the version I suppose. Silentmovies are being brought out in special editions with all sorts -
This version had:
1) Film and people biographies of the actors, directors only
2) Photo gallery - great shot of the unmasking!
Costs:
£12.99 although could be any price, but I wouldn't pick it up for more than this price though. It would be a very high mark up if a shop sold for more than £12.99 ...
The film 'Silent Movie' is director Mel Brooks's comic tribute to the golden days of the silent screen. A movie within a movie, 'Silent Movie' stars Brooks as Mel Funn, a filmmaker who has seen better days for one thing, he's just come out of a bout with the bottle. When his best friends (Marty Feldman and Dom DeLuise) rescue him from despair and convince him to make another attempt at moviemaking, Mel comes up with an idea a silent picture. Alas, this is the 1970s, and in order to get backing from wacky, frazzled studio chief Sid Caesar, the three pals have to get lots of celebrities to agree to be in their silent picture. 'Silent Movie' is, in fact, silent, and all the celebrities Mel and his friends try to win over play themselves (or parodies of themselves). Funny, warm, and packed with sight gags galore, the film evokes the days of Chaplin, Keaton, and Pickford and Fairbanks while remaining oddly, and wondrously, contemporary. There is hardly a funnier scene than when Burt Reynolds vainly admiring himself in the mirror while showering is talked-up about the movie by DeLuise, Brooks, and Feldman, all in the shower together.
