Many film fans will likely choose to refresh their memory of this movie before seeing the sequel "Hannibal" which is out on Friday 26th February.
The original is based around Hannibal Lector, played by Anthony Hopkins. He is an ex-shrink turned crazed killer. However, he is intelligent and incredibily perceptive. He has been caught and has spent 8 years in captivity, which is where he is due to spend the rest of his life.
As a serial killer takes more victims, the FBI think that Lector might be able to help, but he has not being helpful. They try a new technique by sending a young attractive student, played by Jodie Foster, who hopes to join the BI in the future. As she gets more familiar with him he starts to give her information, helping her get closer to the serial killer and giving her a chance of saving the latest girl from her untimely death.
However, as people attempt to gain from Lectors knowledge, he is moved to more pleasant surroundings, and where the security is less strict...
This is a superb film, and it is clear that many more recent films have got their inspiration from here. The acting is superb, Hopkins is suitably hard to grasp, and somewhat disturbing. Foster is young and energetic, and plays the scared young cop type role very well.
Anyone planning to watch Hannibal must watch this film, firstly to know what went before, and secondly just because its a superb film. Everyone should have seen this film!!!
Overall: 9/10, superb.

I welcome your mark out of 10! A very helpful opinion and reminder. I think that the film was good, but I did not find it remotely scary, which seems to go against the grain of public opinion. In my view the film was not THAT good - I do not consider it a classic, and I think a 7/10 would have been a more appropriate mark.

Good, clear and helpful review, although it might have been wise to forewarn people how grisly some of the first film was...not for the faint of heart. I'll certainly be digging this one out again in advance of Hannibal.

Advantages: chilling, superb performances, all the indgredients of a perfect murder mystery Disadvantages: if you don't like horror, you may be less taken with it, but stil give it a chance
Advantages: excellent script, very intelligently crafted, well directed and multiple Oscar-winning! Disadvantages: very few, and they pale into insignificance when compared with the advantages
Advantages: Anthony Hopkins is exceptional in his performance a truly thrilling film. Disadvantages: Is not in my opinion as explosive and intense as the 2001 follow up 'Hannibal'.
