Needless to say, I didn't think much of this at all. I was extremely dissapointed as it's a Spielberg... admittedly the trailer hadn't exactly spiked me to see it in the cinema, so I rented it on DVD. £3.50 down the pan.
I am tempted to rant, so I'll be calm here. My first point will be the storyline - aliens that come to earth for world domination, been done, but so much better. You don't even see much of them though, most of the story is held in Mel's barn, whilst the whole world is supposedly in turmoil and under attack!
The subplot is how Mel Gibson handles this invasion, and his emotional side, recovering from the death of his wife. You know from the start something will spike him into action and break him out of his depression, might as well be some invading aliens...
Macauley Culkin never did much for me as a child star, although now I think he's matured and is better. His brother, in this film, is still annoying and reminiscent of a young Mac, terrible choice. Mel Gibson is reasonable, and I'm sure playing the part of an ex-man of the cloth stroked his ego and served to tell us (again) of how much of a believer he is (although in the film he gives up on God for a bit). I can't even remember who else is in it, too memorable I guess!
The best part for me was seeing an alien (silver), creeping stealthily down an alleyway in a small town, trying not to be noticed - I howled with laughter at such a 'Roswell' interpretation done soooooo badly. This special moment is sometime around halfway through the film and should not be missed!
If you've already seen this film, the damage is done... but beware, if you didn't like it, some people think this is a classic!
