Signs is a movie by the acclaimed director M Night Shyamalan. Who directed THE SIXTH SENSE.Firstly about the director he has great ability to unravel a story in a non-chronilogical manner. He can keep the suspense ticking over even with the dullest of scenes. His movies come across in a atmospheric manner. He is truly a unique director that I would look out for.
Signs, well its all in the title. Signs is what the movie is really all about on many different levels. The movie stars Mel Gibson as the farmer Graham Hess: former priest of the small town they live in.He lives with his two children Morgan (Rory Culkin) and Bo (Abigail Breslin),and his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix).
They live on a crop farm. Grahem Hess has recently lost his wife, and with it his faith in God. So when they begin to get these unexplained crop circles in thier field they wonder what is wrong. They are not the only ones who are having crop circles made overnight, it seems that different parts of the world are also experiencing the same phenomina.
They begin to realise that it is an extra terrestrial event. Morgan is a an avid fan of aliens he seems to be convinced that they want to invade.
Alongside this the narative concentrates on how the Hess family is coping with the death of a beloved one.The movie deals with the emotions that the family encounters. In flash backs and different sections of the movie the story is unraveled as to how George's wife died. This is a very vital part of the movie and it keeps you guessing as to how the wife has died.
The acting is very convincing. Mel Gibson plays his part in a subtle manner.Rory Culkien and A.Breslin are also very good and they bring a nice light to the movie. Joaquin Phoenix is the helping brother who also has a subtle type of character.
The movie doesn't really centralise on the aliens at all they seem to be a side kick, and are brief and disappointing in the movie. This is not a 'Independance Day' type of movie, its not about saving the world but saving yourself. It deals with how a family would deal with this type of crisis. Their is no real big egotistical hero action in it, which gives us all a breather from the normal Hollywood type. Rather the narative illustrates how we can be heroes in our own way, to save ourselves from ourselves.
Signs conatains some light humour and has a very light script. The lighting and cinematography is beautifully constructed. The soundtrack works well with the editing, which is slow and well cut. The movie seems to bring its own quiet atmosphere so you can really feel what type of life the characters are living.
I will not tell you much more about the movie except it is worth viewing, after i watched it I felt better and more calm, You should draw your own opinion about it.So enjoy.

Advantages: Keeps your attention, genuinely jumpy, strong performances from Gibson and Phoenix Disadvantages: Some flimsiness of plot, kids behind us at the cinema :-), predictable ending
