Sid and Nancy.. a match made in hell or a match that was so perfect it just couldn’t last? For those of you out there who don’t really know who Sid and Nancy are, here is a little biography:
Sid Vicious (real name John Simon Richie) was the replacement bass guitarist for the 1970’s punk-rock band, The Sex Pistols. Sid was a drug addict, addicted to cocaine and other narcotics but until he met Nancy, has never touched heroin. Sid became an idol for punk rockers because of his bad lad ways and was adored by his record company.. not so much by his fellow band members due to Sid’s inability to play the right song, not being in time and missing gigs. However, non of that really occurred until Nancy showed up…
Nancy Spungen was a junkie who sold/supplied and took heroin on a very regular basis. She was an American who told her friends and family she was going on tour with a band because she wanted to sleep with the band members. She then flew to England with a band, then later found the Sex Pistols. She met Sid and plied him with heroin.
----------------------- Sid and Nancy: The plot line ----------------------- This film is half truth, half made up to fill in the story but the general gist of these peoples lives is in there. So I don’t bore you or give away too much for the people who
don’t know about Sid and Nancy, the basic plot goes… Sid meets Nancy, Nancy sells him drugs, Sid and Nancy fall in love, Sid goes on tour with the Pistols to America and takes an overdose. Nancy turns up and they stay in America for the rest of their lives with horrid depictions of what it’s like to be so dependant on heroin and the hell of finding money to get the next hit. I think everyone knows how it ends up, Sid and Nancy are probably one of the most famous couples in the world but I won’t spoil it for people who don’t know.
----------------------- What I though… ----------------------- I love this film, and until I started writing this review I didn’t know why. Because to be honest, the acting isn’t the best, the music you hear isn’t a full song so you only get snippets of some of the Sex Pistols best songs and when you get right down to it, the film is about two people are so dependant on drugs it makes you cringe… but that is the MAGIC of this film!!! It isn’t about acting and isn’t really about the music, the Sex Pistols are just a background to this movie, just as it was to Sid. His main focus and his primary concern wasn’t the band he was in or to some degree his self images, it was Nancy, the person he loved more than anything. His other concern was heroin.
I love this film because it shows you in depth the degradation, the lows and the horrendousness that is being addicted to heroin. That sounds so morbid!! But I can’t explain to you truly what draws me to watch this film over and over again. I think it might be the desperate feeling of sadness you have for Sid. I don’t know whether it is just me but I HATE Nancy!! I HATE HER! And this film really shows why I hate her; she is a repugnant, dirty junkie who hates herself and the world she lives in. And I also don’t know whether it is just me or whether this film made me think this way but I believe Sid was a kid (only 21 when he died) who didn’t know better and had been failed by everyone.. and then Nancy turns up, he falls in love and she abuses him and his love and his trust. I think the film really shows you that.
----------------------- The acting ----------------------- To be honest the beginning of the film is pants!! You see a really unrealistic scene of Johnny Rotten (lead singer, played by Andrew Schofield) going along with Sid (played by Gary Oldman), smashing cars in, spray painting everything and generally being arse holes!! (excuse my French). In a comment from Johnny Rotten himself he said the beginning was totally unrealistic “who eats baked beans and champagne for breakfast?!”.
But from that point on, where Sid starts taking drugs, it get serious and Gary Oldman reaeeeally comes onto his own. Gary Oldman is a genius, I love him and his portrayal of Sid is brilliant; he looks like him, he sounds like him, his emotions are so in keeping with the tone of the film and generally, he makes the film. Nancy Spungen’s character though makes me want to punch Chloe Webb’s teeth in!! She is a whiney, screaming annoying witch which is the way she was supposed to act, so I guess Chloe did a good job, but the character is one you will LOATHE!!
----------------------- Features of the DVD ----------------------- Although there are no special features of the DVD, it features Closed Captioned; French Subtitled; Spanish Subtitled; Colour; Stereo Surround Sound; Dolby Noise Reduction; Digital Sound; Stereo Sound; Letter Boxed; Widescreen; Letterboxed. Its run time is 111 minutes.
----------------------- In Conclusion ----------------------- ok so I have given you a background, given you a run down of how I think the acting makes the film, so I am now going to sum up by telling you YOU NEED TO SEE THIS FILM!! It is amazing and watchable again and again, and even if you don’t think a film about sex and heroin and general story lines about degradation, see it anyway!! In my opinion its great and well worth a watch. Let me know what you think of the film :D
