Does this film really need an introduction? Shrek 3, sorry.. Shrek The Third, is everywhere you look at the moment and with it only having been on at the big screen for a matter of days you can still find it popping up as you tune into your every day television shows. Only problem is a lot of people have already picked it up on the black market or downloaded it from the internet. I went to see an evening showing of the movie last night, the first time I have seen Shrek in the cinema, and it had already been pushed on to a small screen making for quite a busy cinema screen. Should be an interesting night.
Shrek is the last of the threequels this summer really. With people slating Spiderman 3 for trying too much, then Pirates 3 for being too long, I remember reading an article in the paper saying how it was good to see Shrek has stuck to its typical length when it comes to creating a third installment. Well, I'm not surprised really as it is a childrens film no matter how much they may try to say they're trying to grow the franchise up with its original fans, they would not turn their back on their key demographic. So about an hour and a half of Shrek with five of my friends, it's hard to believe that there's nothing embarrassing about going to see a childrens film at the cinema. I mean a U certificate, who would have thought that would be choosen over Bruce Willis being all high and mighty in Die Hard 4.0. I once read that the Shrek story was going to be four films, so to keep this franchise going to a fourth film would be interesting
to see what they could do.
What they don't do is bring in a new setting or characters really. Whilst I was blown away by Far Far Away in the second movie, once again this becomes the main setting for the film. I know in my review of Shrek 2 not all that long ago I said I would have loved to see more of the fantastically designed Far Far Away landscape, in Shrek The Third they don't really show you all that much more of it. In fact the movie feels kinda rushed, but I'll get to that later on.
Opening the movie is the same Dreamworks kid letting go of the balloons and them floating up to unveil the Dreamworks logo that I raved about when I first saw it, but for a big franchise like Shrek you would have expected them to perhaps fire it up a bit more for a new film. Like, before Shrek The Third came on they showed the trailer for the Simpsons Movie and instead of just the typical Fox sequence they have Ralph Wiggum singing along. This immediately made a film that I wasn't all that interested in seem slightly more appealing. Rather than having a reminder of what has happened in the first two films, they must have decided that everyone watching Shrek The Third will remember and the opening scene feels quite rushed to me. Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) has returned after having his evil plan thawted in the second film, and this time he is fronting a performance on dinner theatre. Watching the performance are the gang of misfit fairy tale characters fronted by Gingie the Gingerbread Man. Whilst they maybe misfits, they are some of the cutest characters in the film and Gingie is without a doubt my favourite - I was very happy to see more of him this time around.
Things aren't going well for Prince Charming, which is why he decides to recruit an army of evil characters from Disney cartoon flicks, even including Captain Hook. These characters were a very welcome introduction, although they feel slightly wasted on this movie as know development was put into them. Unless the writers have something very impressive planned for Shrek 4, I can't see how they thought it was a good idea to introduce all these new characters and waste them. With the death of Princess Fiona's (Cameron Diaz) father, Shrek (Mike Myers) is next in line for the throne. Shrek does not want to be king however and this leads to him going off in search of Fiona's cousin to bring him back to rule the kingdom of Far Far Away. With Shrek away, this allows Charming and his army to take over Far Far Away and make plans for him to be the next king.
Personally I didn't like the way they brought Charming back to be the bad guy for a second film in a row, it just feels like they wanted to cut some time off the movie by using an already slightly established bad guy. I never really liked him in the first film, and another film with him is just overkill. I have my fingers crossed that he is not in the next Shrek. The scenes with Charming and his crooks taking over the kingdom are probably as frightening as they get, and I guess it could be upsetting to some to see all these baddies taking over, but it's all quite a well done scene. I was actually surprised as to what the main theme of the film was, as from the trailer I always thought it was going to be about Shrek and Fiona having children, or 'baby ogres'. It is very close to the beginning of the film that you find out Fiona is pregnant, and it is when she is having her baby shower that this attack occurs. Luckily she has characters like Snow White and Cinderella to help her, although once again I found these characters to be slightly undeveloped. A nice touch though.
What is my favourite scene of the movie? Well I loved seeing Gingie's life flash before his eyes, from being born, to having his first kiss, to driving his little gingerbread car. Oh yeah, Pinocchio is quite good too. The only really different scenery for the movie is where Shrek goes when he finds Fiona's cousin, Artie (Justin Timberlake). This scenery is a school, and Artie is getting bullied pretty bad. I was interested to see how Justin Timberlake could perform on the big screen as a voice actor, as I'm yet to see him in real life movies such as Alpha Dog, although I've heard he's really talented. Artie's character was made to look a lot like Justin, but to be honest I couldn't really get on board with the character. I just couldn't take him seriously as the big deal that I think we were supposed to believe he was. Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas) also come on the journey to the olden days school-meets-current day school.. that probably sounds quite confusing but it does work. Only problem is Donkey is probably the quietest he's been in all the films, and that's never a good thing. It was good to see the return of Dragon though, and the Dragon-Donkey babies got many 'aws' from the audiance.
Shrek must overthrow Charming, crown Artie as king and become a father. Sounds like a typical day for Shrek. Whilst visually it is the best Shrek with a few improvements, after leaving the movie the first thing that really came to my mind was 'pants', because it's not very good at all in comparison to the other two. The film pulled off in second gear, and you know it's never going to be easy to get moving when you do that. At one point you feel like things are going to improve a lot, but they never really do. I don't think it really works great as a childrens movie either really, and that could be down to the writers trying to appeal to two completely different audiances and splitting the film. An ok evening out, but I think this is going to disappoint a lot of people - especially those who were raving about how good it would be before it even came out.
