After watching this film on a sneak preview edition, I was unpleasantly surprised. The first two Shrek films were massive blockbusters and raved about by anyone who saw them. Unfortunately, this film does not compare. ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ rates it only 41% and IMDB gives it 6.6 out of 10. I feel that these poor ratings are correct. It has a very poor story, the comedy is getting old and unlike the previous two, most of it is made for very small children and those without a sense of humour; there is no content for adults. In my opinion it has gone on for too long now and purposed sequels ‘Shrek The Halls’ set for this Christmas and ‘Shrek 4’ (2010) will be even worse. The comedy monotonous and the same as the previous ones. If the sequels are to be excellent then there needs to be new characters (less of Donkey, Shrek and Puss).
******Story*******
It starts as Shrek 2 finished. Prince Charming is mother-less and a ridicule of Far, far Away. He plans to take over the kingdom that has now been left the Shrek after the death of King Harold (the frog). As Shrek goes to find a new air-to-the-throne King Arthur in England (my opinion a very, very poor scene) after finding out Fiona is pregnant, and Price Charming and his fellow down and out fairy-tale creatures launch an attack on Far, Far Away, with Fiona escaping just in time. Shrek, Donkey, Puss and Arthur happen upon Merlin, (the wizard who has had a nervous breakdown) who transport them back to Far, Far Away but Donkey and Puss swap with each other. Shrek is imprisoned, Arthur flees and Fiona and her fellow women set o free him. In a show that Prince Charming has put on, Shrek will be killed but this goes wrong as Charming is made a ridicule again by laughter from the crowd and they turn on him. Everything turns out alright, there is a happy ending with Arthur becoming King and Shrek coming to terms with parenthood.
******My Opinion******
This film will probably be greatly loved by five year olds and people who will laugh at anything (crappy toilet humour and silly gags). The graphics are just as fantastic and spectacular as the previous two films. However, I feel that this has become too normal and the effect is not so spectacular and original as it was received in the first film. The plot is expected as Shrek goes on an adventure where problems arise and other people help him to survive. The cast is quite good with the usual people along with additions of Justin Timberlake as ‘Prince Charming’ and Eric Idle as ‘Merlin’
******Rating & Reception******
Released in the US on the 18th of May and was welcomed as the third biggest gross total in film history. Although millions flocked to see it, most were unimpressed. As I have earlier said the film was rated low by film review bodies. These ratings were a lot less than the previous two films. It has been described as a “kiddie movie that doesn’t really want to be one”.
*****Overall******
I would say that this is a film to see if you have small children but there will not be much enjoyment for the adults watching. I would not recommend a cinema visit as it not value for the money you pay, rather wait for the DVD release that may have good special features and extras. I would rate this film 5/10, my expectations of a 3 year wait was crushed.
