At first I thought shrek was for younger kids, not older teenagers like myself but when I saw this box set in HMV's sale for £15 I thought I'd better get it as so many people had told me how good shrek was so I thought why not give them both a bash. I decided I'd watch them both with my sister and we sat down to watch the first one. It's all about an Ogre, shrek (voiced by mike myers) who can't get enough of privacy and being on his own, he lives outside a town and every now and then the towns people try to drive him away but they are too scared to do much to him so he always stays. One day though loads of fairytale creatures get expelled from the kingdom where they live and go to live on shrek's land, he is not too pleased as everyone from the three little pigs to the gingerbread man is there. Lord fraquaat who expelled these creatures enters a blinddate competition which is rather amusing and ends up with princess fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz) but because he is a little short, summons any man to go and rescue her from a dragon kept tower. Shrek offers to do this in exchange for all the fairytale creatures to be allowed back in the kingdom therefore he gets his privacy back, so he and his wiseguy sidekick donkey(voiced by eddie murphy) trek off to save the fair princess. Of course shrek ends up saving her and as a result gives her her first kiss, they fall in love and so on but there is a nice little twist complementary of don't judge a book by it's character at the end. All the graphics in this film are just delightful, it it so detailed and apparently they had to tone down princess fiona as she looked too lifelike. The actors do exceptionally well with their voice overs and eddie murphys donkey is just so much fun, always coming out with some wise crack and is very humorous. As for shrek 2, well thats a delight in itself too as the newly weds, shrek and fiona begin their married life back in shreks swamp until they recieve a invitation to attend the kingdom of King Harry and Queen Lillian, the parents of Fiona. In the end shrek reluctantly agrees and sets off to their kingdom, obviously its a joyous occasion for Harry and Lillian as they set up a carnival for their daughters return, but nobody is expecting shrek to look like he does. A fairy god mother is also in this sequal as she seeks to play almost god by blackmailing King Harry to try and get him to make Fiona marry her son, ironically named prince charming. These attempts fail no matter how hard there relationship is pushed in the end shrek and fiona are still happy. Again great performances from the actors with eddie murphy still seeming as enthusiastic as ever. I especially love the bonus on here as it is a shrek kareoke swamp party, where all the characters have a go at singing a well known tune in front of simon cowell. Two excellent films here, rated as a pg due to a little crude humour and scenes of more humorous violence than anything else, a great one for the family and for anyone for that matter, funny references along the way to old films and disneyland etc which makes it even more fun. A must have to anyones collection, buy it!!!!
