In 2001, DreamWorks created a tale about an ogre who leaves his swamp for a mission, which then becomes a fairytale. It involved wonderful new CGI animation. Shrek was the result, and is a magical tale.
The Plot
Shrek is a big, ugly green ogre, who is happily grumpy, living in his swamp with his hut and his own company. He finds himself in the company of an extremely annoying talking donkey (named Donkey!!), and a whole bunch of fairytale creatures, who have invaded his swamp, fleeing from the army of Lord Farquaad. Angered by this invasion of privacy, Shrek sets out with Donkey to confront Lord Farquaad, where he agrees to undertake a mission to save a beautiful Princess in return for his swamp back. However, things are not always as they seem in this fairytale as Shrek finds out on his quest to rescue the Princess.
The 'Cast' voices and Performances
Shrek is magnificently voiced by Mike Myers, and his companion Donkey by the intensely maddening Eddie Murphy (this is a good thing!). Cameron Diaz provides the vocal talent for Princess Fiona, and the wonderfully aloof John Lithgow plays Lord Farquaad.
The voices are brilliant, and the casting is nothing short of perfect. Indeed, the CGI animation even gets close to the physical appearance of the cast in certain cases! The relationship between Shrek and Donkey is exploited beautifully by Myers and Murphy, and their conversations had me in fits of laughter, and the same goes for my 4 year old son.
The CGI and Soundtrack
The CGI here is magical. The likeness to real life is very close and you often get the feeling that the actors are actually there themselves, which is testament to the skill of the CGI team.
The Soundtrack fits perfectly with the film, something which is to be repeated equally well in Shrek 2, released 2004. The first Shrek film has tracks such as 'All Star' from Smash Mouth and some wonderful ballads from Rufus Wainwright and Dana Glover, but it is Eddie Murphy's rendition of 'I'm A Believer' which wins outright here. Brilliant stuff.
My Opinion
So, do I have a negative thing to say about Shrek? No, I do not. The balance between believable adventure for the adults and keeping it simple enough for kids to watch is perfect, The first time I watched it was actually with a group of friends, and were rolling around on the floor with laughter for the most part of the film, and still quote many lines from it on a regular basis. Indeed, we have nicknamed one of our friends 'Donkey' due to his ability to annoy in an endearing way!!!
This is a marvellous film, and a wonderful version of fairytale-telling! Characters such as the Gingerbread Man, the 3 Pigs, the 3 Blind Mice and Little Bo Peep are involved in the tale, as is the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood. It is a brilliantly woven tale that has something for all the family.
And, as a result, I rate this as a 5 star film in my view. It has everything.
The DVD is currently available form amazon.co.uk for £5.97 new. There is also a boxset of Shrek 1 & 2 for £5.00.

Advantages: Shrek has excellent animated properties as well as a great cast of characters and very strong sense of humor. Disadvantages: This film really sucks if you're in it for an original storyline. Besides which, it's technically a movie for older kids even though the humor is targeted at adults and teenagers.
