This is a brilliant animated movie about an Ogre and a donkey. Shrek is a green Ogre who lives in a swamp. He's minding his own business when the local Prince (lord Farquhar) decides that all fairytale creatures must be banished from his lands because they are imperfect.
The guards are rounding up all the fairytale creatures such as snow white and the seven dwarves and pinocchio when along comes an old man and woman with a talking donkey, voice by Eddie Murphy. They sell the donkey to the guards but he manages to escape and runs into the swamp. The guards chase after him and run into Shrek who scares them away. The donkey and the Ogre become reluctant friends.
The Prince finds out that the Ogre resisted arrest and protected the donkey, and he decides to teach the Ogre a lesson. He banishes all the fairytale creatures to Shrek's swamp, and when shrek gets back to his cottage, he finds a multitude of different creatures on his land.
Shrek decides to go and see Lord Farquhar about getting his swamp back. In the meantime, the Prince is deciding who he wants to marry in order to become King. The mirror gives him three options: Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, or the Princess Fiona guarded by the Dragon in the castle... Lord Farquhar chooses the princess guarded by the dragon, but what he doesn't know is that the witches cast a spell on her when she was little and as a result she turns into an Ogre when it's a full moon....
Lord Farquhar decides to hold a fighting contest to see which of his knights is going to rescue the princess in the castle and bring her back to him. At this point Shrek arrives and demands his land back. The prince orders all his men to fight Shrek but of course Shrek is much too strong and defeats them easily. Lord Farquhar then makes a bargain with Shrek. If Shrek brings back the princess he'll give him his land back to himself...
And so the journey begins. Donkey accompanies Shrek on the journey, talking happily all the way. They reach the castle and this is my fave moment of the whole film. The castle is surrounded by a moat, and the only way across is a rickety old rope bridge which has half the boards missing. Donkey is afraid of heights, and won't go across the bridge, that is, until Shrek makes him by cajoling him all the way until he realises that he's got across the bridge after all!
They rescue the princess and head back to Lord Farquhar, but on the way Shrek and the princess get to know each other and they start to fall in love...however Shrek overhears a conversation between Donkey and the princess which makes him think she doesn't like him, but he's got the wrong end of the stick!
Does Fiona end up with the boring Lord Farquhar? Or does Shrek come to the rescue? Pick up the movie and see!
This is a feelgood movie, with loads of little comedy snippets in it! Classic lines from Eddie Murphy and the scene where Lord Farquhar is torturing the gingerbread man is sooo funny!
It's a must see and once you've seen it you'll want to watch it again....The extras on the DVD are brilliant, there's some animated stuff that you can play on the PC too. The animation and graphics on the whole are excellent. Not just one for the kids!
