Yes, it's true! Shrek won the Oscar for best animated film, and justifiably too! This Universal rated film is just one of the funniest family films out there right now, it's a must-see!
It stars Mike Myers (Austin Powers) as the Scottish-accented ogres Shrek, the inimitable Eddie Murphy (The Nutty Professor) as Donkey, Cameron Diaz (Charlie's Angels) as Princess Fiona and John Lithgow (Third Rock) as Lord Farquaad.
The plot is thus! Lord Farquaad, the baddie, wants to be a king and rule DuLoc, the perfect kingdom. But to do this, he needs to marry a Princess. And wouldn'tya know it, she happens to be locked in a tower guarded by a dragon. As luck would have it however, Shrek, the loner ogre, is rather annoyed as his swamp is invaded, and goes to see Farquaad. He strikes a deal with him, and goes off the see if he can visit the Princess. I won't spoil the rest for you!
Mike Myers is fabulous as Shrek, with a dry wit, and a great voice for it. Not an obvious choice, I'll admit, but definitely the right one! Eddie Murphy, what can you say about him? He is just perfect for the donkey! John Lithgow, the ex-Shakespearian actor, manages to bring big voice to little Farquaad, and Cameron Diaz plays the Princess beautifully.
The special effects, well, all you need to know is that this film took 5 years to make! That says it all, and it's flawless.
The soundtrack is groovy, funky and rocky. It's got bits and pieces everywhere, and on the DVD is a Shrek in the Swamp Karaoke party at the end!
You do get quite a few extras with this, including: Shrek's revoice studio (DVD Rom only) Interactive Games Character interviews (these are brilliant) Filmmaker's Commentary The Tech of Shrek International Dubbing Featurette Animated Menus Production Notes, Cast and Crew Bins.
This is great for kids to watch, my 2 and a half year old insists that he watch it at least once a day! But there's also some adult innuendos in there and quite a few background bits, look out for the cookbook in the castle!
This film is definitely value for money, it keeps my son amused, it's not at all irritating and it's great fun. In short, it's worth it.

Yes Nikki, I agree completely. It was one of the funniest films I ever saw! It was made even more enjoyable as I thought I was taking my kids to see some awful cartoon. I laughed my socks off, and the kids loved the bit where he made a candle for the dinner table from his earwax!
