Although I’m not a fan of animation by any means I was dragged to see Shrek. Because of my aversion to the genre I didn’t really go in with an open mind and was sure that I wouldn’t really enjoy it.
However, I thought it was alright but not as good as its been made out to be. The story is about an ogre who has to rescue a princess for a nasty Lord to Marry. There is a lot of talks about how ogres are like onions because they have layers and the general moral point of the story that we have come to expect from a children’s film.
Most of the voices were very good. Eddie Murphy as the talking donkey is very funny and John Lithgoe (?) (third rock from the sun guy) as the nasty Lord was also impressive. Cameron Diaz wasn’t really anything ground breaking, but her character was quite dull so it didn’t matter that it had a dull voice to go with it. Mike Myers was nothing but very very bad. His Scottish accent was nowhere near convincing. I probably wouldn’t have noticed, but whilst at university I have become to know the Scottish accent very well by getting to know someone from Dundee. There were a lot of times when he seemed to forget he was meant to be Scottish. Austin Powers standards he was not.
The saving grace of this has to be the soundtrack. It was great and added to the points were it was funny. If this comes out to buy then I'd recommend it to all.
Considering I don’t like animation I suppose this was okay, but it’s not something that I can see myself buying or renting or ever bothering to see again. It was alright but nothing special. If you are a big fan of animation then go for it, if not, wait for the video. It’ll give you a few laughs, but it aint all that.

I'm pretty sure the stuff about onions was tongue in cheek! And there are many, many Scottish accents - I'd say Mike Myers was using a lowland accent from somehwere near the English border. So speaks the English Language graduate!
