Showtime is possibly one of the worst pieces of cinematography with 2 of Hollywood’s finest actors.
Let me tell you all about it.
Background.
Showtime is set in Los Angeles where everyone wants to be famous or in the movies. It is full of wannabe actors and actresses that also work as *-fill the blank appropriately-*. In One of the characters roles in the film, this happens to be a cop. A cop who is failing miserably ... ...new reluctant partner to feature in a “fly on the wall”documentary about LA Detectives.
They are not ready for the popularity and notoriety they are about to receive from the public. I might as well tell the rest of the weak plot because its not worth you watching it, but I wont. Don’t want to be seen as ruining a bad film any more than it has managed to do itself.
Cast
Trey, the actor cop, is played by Eddie Murphy who has got ...

Advantages: A few amusing moments Disadvantages: Poor script, disjointed and not really clever
...because I’d heard mixed things. Showtime is one of those movies; it had all the right elements that appealed to me. Eddie Murphy in a comedy, De Niro playing the straight man and Rene Russo as well. It was also meant to be a satire/spoof on reality TV shows, something that’s a pet hate of mine. Well Showtime only made half it’s budget back in the US and I can see why.
Detective Mitch Preston (De Niro) is a tough police detective. Officer Trey Sellars ... ...firepower.
The problem with Showtime is that it doesn’t really know what it wants to be. Naturally it’s an action comedy but at times it doesn’t know how hard it wants to be. People get shot in this movie, there are fistfights but most of the time they have comedy thrown in that just dies. There isn’t really any stand out funny moments in this movie. The main root of this problem seems to be with the script which can’t really come up with any original ...

Showtime stars Robert De Niro as Mitch Preston, a hard working police detective, after Mitch’s partner is shot at an undercover drugs gone wrong he goes insane and shoots a video camera out of the hands of a reporter filming the action after he refuses to turn it off. Producer Chase Renzi makes a deal with the Cops, either a $10 million lawsuit for damages and endangerment or they allow Renzi to make a documentary following ... ...Digital/ SDDS
I bought Showtime from Woolworth’s in Barnsley, south Yorkshire it was £7.99
Conclusion
A very funny film perfect for Murphy’s comedic timing and De Niro’s hard man routine, but plot wise it is paper thin, like most Murphy movies the plot revolves around him getting the most airtime and showing off his wide range of comedy skills.
De Niro seems to carry on from his role in Meet The Parents with his attitude and nonchalant air. As ...

Advantages: a no-brainer funny film Disadvantages: a waste of talent
This picture came out in 2002, though it totally passed me by at the time and probably went straight-to-DVD, it does have a heavyweight cast: Robert de Niro, Eddie Murphy, Rene Russo and William Shatner. OK maybe William Shatner shouldn't be described as a heavyweight actor, perhaps just heavyweight. For what it's worth the plot is this: TV producer Chase Rensi(Rene Russo) has the idea of partnering the straight-laced cop Mitch Preston (De Niro) ... ...in a reality TV show. Sellers gets the gig after staging an arrest with an acting colleague of his. Now of course Preston wants nothing to do with Sellers as he doesn't think him a real police officer. Mitch has to have his apartment made over for TV in the style of Miami Vice, because "research shows that buddy-buddy cops must live in freaky houses", he's also given a pet , a German Shepherd ex- sniffer dog coked up to the eyeballs. "This apartment ...

SHOWTIME deftly combines clever satire and explosive action, taking the buddy cop movie in a new direction. Robert De Niro stars as Mitch Preston, a no-nonsense detective who makes headlines when he shoots the television camera right out of the hands of a meddlesome photographer during a bust. The department is sued for millions, but a slick producer (Rene Russo) drops the suit to force Mitch to star on the network's new reality series. Trey Sellars (Eddie Murphy), a struggling actor and incompetent patrolman, bamboozles his way into a plum role as Mitch's partner. Mitch is a better cop, but Trey knows a lot more about how to be a TV star. He even comes up with the show's catchphrase: "It's SHOWTIME!" In the film's funniest setpiece, William Shatner is brought in to teach Mitch and Trey how to master important TV cop procedures, like jumping on the hood of a car. Things get more serious as the celebrity cops track down a crazed criminal armed with a powerful new weapon. Director Tom Dey (SHANGHAI NOON) keeps things moving, and laces the action with reflexive humor. Murphy is in fine comic form, and has terrific chemistry with De Niro.
