Released in the spring of 1988 this comedy/sci-fi follows the continuing life of 'Johnny 5', the robot who thinks it's a human.
**BRIEF PLOT**
Some time after escaping the Nova Laboratories 'Johnny five', as the robotic/wanna-be-human is in hiding with Stephanie and Newton. Meanwhile, Ben Jahrvi, (played by Fisher Stevens) is living in New York City, selling toy 'Johnny five' robots from a suitcase. The toy robots catch the attention of Sandy Banatoni, (played by Cynthia Gibb), who happens to be part of a think tank for a large toy company, and she orders a large amount from Ben. A street hustler called Fred Ritter, (played by Michael McKean) happens upon the deal and offers, if not forces Ben to accept his offer of help.
Unbeknown to the two men, the business premises they are renting is also being used by some very unfriendly characters, headed by Oscar Baldwin, (played by Jack Weston), with the intentions of tunnelling into a nearby bank to steal a set of jewels called the Vanderveer collection.
With the help of the newly arrived 'Johnny five' the toy making business seems to be going well until Oscar and his crew pay them a visit.
As Ben is desperately trying to seduce Sandy he doesn't realise that Fred is planning more for 'Johnny five' than making toys.
So with a robbery in progress, a woman to seduce, an untrustworthy partner and a 1000 toys to be made Ben has a lot on his mind in this movie but which is most important to him?
**IN CONCLUSION**
Not a great sequel but still worth watching. Fisher Stevens again plays the part of Ben fantastically, his shyness with women creating some comical scenes as he desperately tries to talk to the very beautiful Cynthia Gibb. Introducing Michael McKean as the con man Fred Ritter was a great idea as it brought in an element of insecurity for the future of the robot.
The story was well written and the mix of humour, romance comedy and slapstick violence complimented each other, almost like a fine wine.
There are no real similarities between this movie and the first, there are no military interventions, no running gun battles and no dopey soldiers for Johnny five to contend with. But there is a good amount of action and comedy involving some even dopier criminal minded individuals and a foolproof plan being executed by fools.
The violence in this movie is, as I said, more slapstick than reality, with the old 'smashed in the face with an iron bar/ shaking your head to cure it' sort of violence I can not see this movie upsetting the younger member of the family.
Would I recommend this movie? Yes I certainly would, even if you watch it just the once it is entertaining and somewhat comical in parts. It is quite tame regarding violence and bloodshed so there are no reason to ban the kids from the room.
