This film is the sequel to "Short Circuit". In "Short Circuit", a robot (Number Five) is hit by lightning and short circuits. This results in him becoming "alive". He is able to think and feel just as a human does.
The Plot ========== Ben Jahrvi is an Indian immigrant who is trying to make a living on the streets of New York. He used to work for the company responsible for Number Five but since his "malfunction", Ben no longer has a job. He makes some toy robots which are similar in appearance to Number Five in the hopes of making some money. One of them manages to escape from his street stall and find its way to Sandy, a toy purchaser for the toy department of a large department store. She is desperate to find a popular toy after some recent flops and immediately makes a huge order with Ben. Ben is not sure about taking such a big order but a nearby wheeler-dealer named Fred decides to make himself Ben's business partner and agrees
to the deal.
The two men set forth trying to meet the deadline for building the robots but have little chance of meeting the deadline until Number Five is sent to help them. Soon they are well on their way to meeting the target but unfortunately Fred lets slip to Number Five (who now calls himself "Johnny Five") that he is in a city. Johnny Five then sets out on a frenzied quest for "input" which leads him into a series of scrapes.
To add to their problems, a gang of bank robbers want to use the warehouse Ben and Fred are using in order to break into a nearby bank vault and start sending in thugs to scare them off. Meanwhile, Ben starts to fall for Sandy and asks both Fred and Johnny Five for advice on how to woo her with comical results. Later, Ben and Fred are locked in a freezer by the thugs and it is left to Sandy and a dieing Johnny Five to try to save the day.
Blurb ==== "Number Five, that incredible, lovable robot from the smash hit Short Circuit, is back and taking the big city by storm in this action-packed comedy adventure for the entire family. Upbeat Number Five's out for some "urban input," but some street hoods, a greedy banker and a gang of crooks see his naïveté as their high-tech ticket to easy street. Will Five survive the big, bad city and its big, bad city slickers? Keep your wires crossed when you switch on this high-voltage film."
The Cast =========== Fisher Stevens: Ben Jahrvi Michael McKean: Fred Ritter Cynthia Gibb: Sandy Banatoni Jack Weston: Oscar Baldwin Tim Blaney: Johnny Five
Other Information ============== Director: Kenneth Johnson Theme: Family adventure film Classification: "PG" Length: 106 minutes
My thoughts ========== I have probably seen this film more times than the first film and I love it every time. Johnny Five's endearing innocence, his loyalty, Ben's clumsy attempts at romancing Sandy and the amusing eighties fashions are just some of the aspects I enjoy. I think part of the appeal is that we can all identify with both Ben's and Johnny Five's experience of being in a strange place where we don't know how things are done. We can therefore empathise with the scrapes they both get into whilst at the same time seeing the comical side to them. I particularly like Johnny Five's strong sense of loyalty towards those he sees as friends.
Conclusion ========= Although having been made in 1988, this film has dated in some ways; I think it has something of a timeless appeal to it. I think it is the sort of film that the whole family can still enjoy together*. I bought the video for £3.59 in a charity shop which I think was a bargain. I'm not sure how easy it is to buy copies generally but it is often on TV so I would say do watch it next time it is on.
* At 106 minutes, the film may be a bit long for the youngest children. The cover also states that "some scenes may be unsuitable for young children". I would therefore recommend watching it yourself first before allowing very young children to watch.
