When the man known only as Smith (Clive Owen), a gorgeous streetwalker (Monica Bellucci) and a maniacal hitman (Paul Giamatti) get swept up in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, it sets off an explosion of armed thugs, flying bullets and nonstop action so big, it'll blow you away!Death Sentence:Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) is a mild-mannered executive with a loving family and a perfect life, until one gruesome night when his teenage son is senselessly murdered during a gas station holdup. Transformed by grief and not satisfied with courtroom justice, Nick takes the law into his own hands - and wages an all-out war against a gang of vicious street thugs. Directed by James Wan (Saw), Death Sentence is a gripping revenge thriller loaded with in-your-face action, bone-snapping violence and nail-biting suspense!Hostage:Devastated by a failed hostage situation which resulted in the deaths of a young mother and her child, LAPD negotiator Jeff Talley (Bruce Willis) exits Los Angeles for a no profile job as chief of police in the low crime hamlet of Bristo Camino, a small town in Ventura County. When three delinquent teenagers follow home a family intending to steal their car, they have inadvertently picked the wrong house on the wrong day. The trio find themselves trapped in a multi-million dollar compound on the outskirts of town, owned by an accountant working for a mysterious crime enterprise. Panicked, the teenagers take the family hostage, placing Talley in exactly the kind of situation he never wanted to face again. Soon after, Talley readily hands authority of the hostage situation over to the Ventura County Sheriffs Department and leaves the scene. Meanwhile, inside the compound is digital information, which is time sensitive and invaluable to the mysterious criminals and critical to their enterprise. They will stop at nothing to get what belongs to them. Talley is forced to resume the command he abandoned, where the stakes quickly evolve into a hostage situation far more volatile and terrifying than anything he could ever imagine.

DVD Description
SHOOT 'EM UP: Paul Giamatti, Clive Owen, and Monica Belluci star in this fast-paced thriller about a pair of strangers united to save a newborn baby from the terrifying grip of an unrelenting criminal. DEATH SENTENCE: A businessman is forever changed after he sees how brutal men can be. He vows vengeance on the men responsible for the death of his son, beginning a brutal war with the criminals. HOSTAGE: A former hostage negotiator, turned town sheriff, finds himself facing a past he would rather forget... A failed robbery leaves a family held hostage in a house containing incriminating evidence which would see a major crime lord do time. The sheriff must face the danger posed by the hostage takers and the gangsters who will stop at nothing to retrieve what is theirs.
Advantages: Great action scenes, good cast. Disadvantages: N/A
..., this would be tough to beat. Ok, so not many things were blown up but the fight scenes were great entertainment. The story line would become a bit difficult to follow if you were not paying 100% attention so its worth considering that before you sit down to watch it. The motivation behind Hertz' pursuit of the baby and some of the twists and turns provided by his reasons can easily confuse those with short attention spans.
There is alot of black humour in this film too. Paul Giamatti plays the cold-blooded hitman Hertz very well, especially when he is trying to make small talk with his unwitting wife while he is trying to kill Smith. Smith has a peculiar obsession (which I won't go into here) which also provides some really bizzarre moments.
I would highly recommend this film to anyone with a twisted sense of humour or a love of escapism...

Advantages: Some good action scenes, decent performances Disadvantages: Bit far fetched and lacking plot
...When a movie's called ShootEmUp, you expect to find it on the bottom shelf of the rental store. What you don't expect to see is names such as Clive Owen, Monica Belluci and Paul Giamatti starring in it.
The movie is a very difficult one to judge, you'll either like it or hate it. I don't think there can be much of an in-between.
The film opens with Smith (Owen) sitting on a bench at night minding his own business. Soon the silence is broken by the screams of a pregnant woman running away from an angry guy. When a gun is shown, Owen follows in pursuit and finds himself embroiled in a gigantic shoot-up with various goons for hire. At the end he's left with a dead mother and a newborn baby with a villainous crime boss (Giamatti) after their blood.
What ensues over the next 80-minutes is a completely insane series of gun fights...

Advantages: Fun, tongue in cheek. Disadvantages: No real story.
...verdict:
It is a very 'tongue in cheek' portrayal of cinema and the way cinema portrays violence, women, guns and the distinction between good and bad, in a very post modern way, at least that is the intellectaul credence that I am giving it.
It was fun, nonsense, unbelieveable, ridiculous, crap, great, fun, fun, fun.
I am reviewing this as film only as I could not bring myself to watch the DVD extras yet, which nonetheless I will list:
Deleted/alternate scenes
Commentary by Michael Davis (director)
Ballet of bullets - making of 'Shoot 'emup'
Animatics
Theatrical trailer
