When a movie's called Shoot Em Up, you expect to find it on the bottom shelf of the rental store. What you don't expect to see is names such as Clive Owen, Monica Belluci and Paul Giamatti starring in it.
The movie is a very difficult one to judge, you'll either like it or hate it. I don't think there can be much of an in-between.
The film opens with Smith (Owen) sitting on a bench at night minding his own business. Soon the silence is broken by the screams of a pregnant woman running away from an angry guy. When a gun is shown, Owen follows in pursuit and finds himself embroiled in a gigantic shoot-up with various goons for hire. At the end he's left with a dead mother and a newborn baby with a villainous crime boss (Giamatti) after their blood.
What ensues over the next 80-minutes is a completely insane series of gun fights brings in a lactating hooker (Belluci) to take care of the baby as he looks to get the baby to safety and find out why people want a baby dead.
And that's pretty much it. Owen runs about with a gun, chased by people with guns and bullets fly in an ever-increasing level of absurdity. You know someone's got the balls to test an audience when they stage a shoot-out whilst skydiving.
There are little bits of character development throughout but nothing major, all it is is guns, guns and more guns.
So this is where your enjoyment of the film will come in. If you're after something to satisfy your thirst for well developed characters and story then walk away now. If you want some mindless action with some imaginative and crazy stunts then this is probably for you.
Personally I thought it kept me occupied during its brief runtime. I bought into the fact that it wasn't to be taken seriously. The performances of the actors in it probably raise it above another piece of DTV dirge but ultimately it's instantly forgettable stuff.
- The DVD -
The widescreen presentation is a crisp, solid affair. The film has a gloomy look about it but you're not spending your time hunting for shadows in the dark.
Of course with this many bullets flying around the soundtrack is pretty involving with all the bells and whistles. It will certainly satisfy the action sound hound.
- Extras -
This was a rental disc from EIV, as usual there are no extras to be found on the disc.
- Finally -
It's alright, bit like marmite.

Advantages: Perfect for the action junkie - a highly stupid movie with bags of cool. Disadvantages: Not enjoyable if you forget to switch your brain off!
