Shoot em Up was made in 2007 and was written and directed by Michael Davis, the main cast include Clive Owen ( Children of Men ) who plays Smith, Monica Bellucci ( Passion of the Christ ) who plays Donna, and Paul Giamatti ( The Illusionist ) who plays Hertz. The story centres around a new born baby whom Smith as named Oliver.
In the opening scenes a pregnant woman runs past Smith who is sitting quietly at a bus stop, she is pursued by a gunman. After she and the gunman go up an alley Smith decides to investigate and from here on in Smith's life in no longer quiet. In a room up the alley Smith is forced to help the pregnant woman deliver her child, unfortunately many more gunmen arrive and the mother ends up being killed in the crossfire. From here on in Smith protects the child from what appears to be and endless onslaught of gunmen and rogues.
In the process he learns why the child is so important and has so many after his blood, with the help of an old Hooker friend Donna who reluctantly decides to help Smith. The action is very fast and furious and the stunts are way way over the top, to the point that we whilst watching were bursting into laughter frequently, kind of Matrix meets Bond, where absolutely anything is possible.
The performances are very good if you accept the unlikelihood of some of the stunts, and the story is pretty good if somewhat far fetched. It certainly shows up a sense of humour in director Michael Davis and the whole movie has the feel of one which was never intended to be taken to seriously. It is for all that an entertaining and fast paced movie which has some pretty neat special effects. Every so often throughout the film Smith is seen munching menacingly on a carrot and in some scenes this carrot comes in very handy.
From the scene where the child is born right up to the final credit's the movie moves and incredible pace with very little let up, there are numerous car chases and twists in the plot, but it is not a complicated film and one which I very much enjoyed, even if it is a fair drift from my usual screening. Clive Owen gives a good tongue in cheek performance and the chemistry between him and Bellucci is evident. As in most movies of this type there are various baddies floating about but Paul Giamatti gave a great performance as Hertz the mastermind behind the ever failing tide of attempts to capture Oliver.
There is a vast amount of humour in the movie but most of it seems to have been visual, and another screening might yet prove it even funnier, since with all the action and shooting some on the one liners and visuals may well have escaped me. Overall it is a good film at best and one probably worthy of holding a decent position on the DVD shelf.

Advantages: Perfect for the action junkie - a highly stupid movie with bags of cool. Disadvantages: Not enjoyable if you forget to switch your brain off!
