For the first time we've been retained by a corpse.
discovered dead, her throat ripped open. The tiny town is alarmed and believes the death to be caused by a legendary monster. Suspecting the culprit is human, Holmes and Watson attempt to cut through the town's superstitions and prevent another attack. Arguably the best film of the Rathbone series, the Scarlet Claw is atmospheric, grisly and devilishly enjoyable.SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE HOUSE OF FEAR (1945):Holmes is sent by an insurance company to investigate the gruesome deaths of several wealthy - and heavily insured - men staying at Drearcliff mansion in Scotland. Each man's death is predicated by the strange delivery of orange pips to the next victim in this atmospheric adaptation of Conan Doyle's Adventures of the Five Orange Pips.

Holmes discovers that the victims all liked to gamble and disguises himself as an Indian officer and at a posh London Casino where he meets the fascinating Andrea Spedding whom he is convinced is behind the killings. The Scarlet ClawThe villagers of the tiny hamlet of La Morte Rouge are terrified; a legendary glowing monster has reappeared. DVD Description
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are brought to the tiny village of La Morte Rouge, Canada to investigate a series of ghastly slayings. The villagers believe the murders signal the reappearance of a legendary ghost whose glowing form can be seen floating through the fog-shrouded marshes. At first the famed detective is challenged by the phantom's many different disguises, but Holmes regains control of the case after an ingenious ruse leads him to the identity of the ghostly killer.
Advantages: Entertaining Disadvantages: Not a Conan Doyle plot
...view of Watson, who although is not as smart as Holmes, is certainly not as stupid as he is made to be here.
As Professor Moriarty, Lionel Attwill did not shine in any way, shape or form; in fact, I barely noticed he was there. The odd time I did, he came over as being slightly annoying. Disappointing.
Dennis Hoey plays Inspector Lestrade for the first time in this film. Again, he is portrayed as a total idiot, somewhere along the same lines as Watson.
Technical bits
My version of the disc has an interesting documentary about all the actors who had played SherlockHolmes before Basil Rathbone. Many of them performed on the stage and as such, I had not heard of them. The documentary was interesting, but not worth buying the DVD for unless you really like the film.
Classification: PG
The film is in black and white, although...

Advantages: It is Sherlock Holmes! Disadvantages: Dated and a bit theatrical
...In the world of SherlockHolmes there are two very well known screen portrayals of Conan Doyle?s immortal detective. Jeremy Brett on the TV screen in the 80?s and 90?s and Basil Rathbone on the cinema screen in the 40?s. There have been many other versions of the character in both formats but most of them are lesser versions, unable to match the style and quality of these two.
Before even Rathbone played Holmes though there was a British series of Holmes films starring one Arthur Wontner.
The Triumph of SherlockHolmes was made in 1935 and is one of five Holmes films made in the thirties starring Wontner. One of these is lost forever, a second is rarely seen but the other three are all available on DVD very cheaply. My copies came from the much lamented Murder One shop in central London, a shop that sadly vanished very recently from...

Advantages: Entertaining Disadvantages: Not sure about Everett, weak story, set in the wrong period
...SherlockHolmes is fast succumbing to his drug habit when a new case takes his interest, and, with the help of Dr Watson, he manages to pull himself together enough to work on the case. A number of girls from wealthy families are going missing, later found dead. All the girls appear to be young and innocent, yet someone obviously wants them wiped off the face of the earth. Then one young girl manages to survive the kidnap. Can she lead Holmes and Watson to the murderer? And will the latest forensic advances help them on their way?
Since I was a child, I have loved SherlockHolmes stories, whether on screen or in printed book form. I am, however, rather choosy when it comes to who plays Sherlock Holmtes. So many actors have taken on the role, only to fail miserably. My personal favourites are Jeremy Brett, who is the perfect Holmes in...
