Directed by Terence Fisher, who is mainly remembered for his long career with Hammer Horror Films. When at Hammer Fisher directed The Hound Of The Baskervilles ... ...& Andre Morrel as Watson that was in 1959.
3 years later Fisher went to Europe taking Hammer star Christopher Lee and filmed this version . Christopher Lee makes a fine Holmes and Thorley Walters not a bad Watson trouble is they are saddeled with a lousey script and a slow story . The dubbing on the version I have is awful I am not sure if it is Christopher Lees voice they use it is definatley not Thorley Walters. One scene early on in the ... more

Directed by Terence Fisher, who is mainly remembered for his long career with Hammer Horror Films. When at Hammer Fisher directed The Hound Of The Baskervilles a very effective Holmes film with Peter Cushing as Holmes & Andre Morrel as Watson that was in 1959. 3 years later Fisher went to Europe taking Hammer star Christopher Lee and filmed this version . Christopher Lee makes a fine Holmes and Thorley Walters not a bad Watson trouble is they are saddeled with a lousey script and a slow story . The dubbing on the version I have is awful I am not sure if it is Christopher Lees voice they use it is definatley not Thorley Walters. One scene early on in the film show some children playing in the near the Thames, nothing wrong with that I hear you cry, well not until they open their mouths and talk with American accents. the film also stars Senta Berger the only other "name" in the cast. I would assume you would want to be a holmes collector to consider purchasing this little gem.
The DVD Film is on the Orbit label and the Black and White picture is not a great print is quite grainy. There are no extras at all .
Holmes and Watson are on the trail to find a necklace that once belonged to Cleopatra. Holmes must unravel the mystery which brings him face to face with his arch rival Moriarty...

Legendary Baker Street sleuth Sherlock Holmes (Christopher Lee) takes on the evil Moriarty again when the mad doctor goes after a priceless necklace which once belonged to Cleopatra. Director Terence Fisher and star Lee had previously worked together in several successful Hammer horror films, including THE HORROR OF DRACULA (1957), THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1957), and THE MUMMY (1959). This was a German/French/Italian co-production.
