Call it stupidity; call it a state of weakness; but once every blue moon I'll pick out a film that's not on my usual viewing wavelength. Given that this choice was She's The Man I'd have to say it was stupidity; in fact I'd go as far as to say that for watching this atrocity I should be led down to the bottom of the garden and shot full force in the head, that is after all what farmers do to sick animals isn't it?
Viola (Amanda Bynes) loves football, and when her school cancels the girls football team she becomes so incensed that she decides to assume her brothers identity and transfer to a nearby school simply so she can play football. And so Viola assumes the identity of Sebastian and heads for the rival school, while there she becomes confused tries to set up romances, and even falls in love herself.
I make no bones about this She's The Man is utter s**t! Made totally ridiculous due to the fact that its lead is barely convincing as a girl, let alone a boy. Watching this movie is not un-reminiscent of having an enema in public (I can imagine) not a big crowd just 70 or 80, just enough for it to be totally humiliating. What's worse is that this type of movie has been done what seems like 100 times before, except in those cases the movies obviously pull it off. I'd honestly like to see the variety of person that actually found this movie amusing, I'd be reasonable and polite before pointing them in the direction of the men in white coats.
I think I need to define things a little, in order to give this insult some justification. Lets start with the lead actress, she is awful her role as a girl, is a bit off and false something that you figure she could not possibly get wrong. But as a boy its far worse, the clawing she has at being amusing are totally pathetic, it's kind of like watching a dirty old man with a twitch. Part of the "humour" is that she is meant to be unconvincing on a certain level, but somewhere along the lines this doubt that people has is supposed to drop; the only way this could ever be possible is by a complete lobotomy.
The script itself is pretty wrong, and unfortunately they dragged Airplane star Julie Haggarty in on this. The script does not give any justification for anything that ever takes place, nor does it really allow you to draw any likeness with any of the characters. Three of the male leads look so much alike that it's difficult to tell them apart, add to this the fact that there characters don't develop and right at the very end I was still not 100% convinced of who the love interest was in the movie, I understood who the character was but the person playing them? Not a chance! There is also a variety of what are supposed to be "quirky" characters that are designed to draw added humour to the piece, these are just as annoying as Bynes naff delivery in the leading role.
My next issue is continuity, if your going to do that thing where the main characters pull their boxer shorts up so you can see them, you could at least have the continuity in place to make the stunt doubles where the same colour underwear. As a result Butch starts off a fight with black underwear, and ends the fight in white. Then Bynes dress completely changes design during a catfight, the split that runs up the back of the dress has disappeared by the end of the fight. Some bleaching in one of the characters hair grows out, and mysteriously returns in an adjoining scene. And during the final football match Dukes make up although the same reverses.
Another big annoyance is the fact that Viola's brother Sebastian is supposed to be her twin, and the joke throughout the movie is that it's difficult to tell them apart. If this is the case then there is a large chunk of the American population fooling themselves that they don't need glasses. It's kind of like putting Sybil Sheppard next to Cate Blanchett and saying they look the same, except at least with that last paring they are the same sex knocking 50% of the objections away. Just to put a real kick in, this movie is allegedly based in elements upon Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, I can honestly say without fear of reproach that Shakespeare would turn in his grave to discover his name in anyway associated to this abysmal abortion.
But I guess the key factor for me is this is the sort of movie the youth of the day enjoy, and based on its box office turnover it did pretty well. Now turn the clock back to my youth and we had Pretty In Pink, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, Soul Man, The Secret Of My Success, and even the likes of Weird Science to draw comparisons too, and learn lessons from; and let me just say I learned a lot about growing up from these movies. Has the youth of today sunk so low that they can in some way relate to this? If this is the case, then my heart is truly broken and our future lies in the hands of idiots.
Being the rental copy there were no special features present on the DVD with the exception of a few trailers for far superior movies. You can rent this movie pretty much anywhere, and its currently showing on Sky Movies if you feel the need to bathe in this disaster.

First of all I was glad at how fast the movie got going because I hate movies which take ages for you to know what's happening. This movie was good at moving the plot along really fast so that the viewer doesn't' get bored (I myself get bored quite easily when watching films! )But this film was really good at introducing us , and straight away I knew what was the movie was about and by the end ...

Advantages: Funny, Enjoyable Disadvantages: Not the most amazing acting
recently watched she's the man for the hundredth time and therefore thought it was about time I reviewed it. She's the man is a chick flick comedy film aimed at a relatively young audience. It was originally out in 2006 in the cinema and then the same year out on DVD. I went to see it at the cinema and bought the DVD as soon as it was out. The main storyline of She's The Man is based on the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night, which is what quite a few ... ...done well though and even many of the characters have the same names as those in the play. I think it really demonstrates how versatile Shakespeare's stories are and how they can be adapted to suit a modern day narrative. Anyway the story is based around the main character Viola who is a football mad girl. When her team is cut at school and the coach of the boys team (including her boyfriend) laughs at her when she asks to join their team she is ...

Advantages: Some laughs Disadvantages: VERY predictable and cheesy in places.
When I joined up with my online DVD rentals site, I had to make a list of 20 titles I wanted to watch so that if one wasn't available, they could send me an alternative. At the very end of the list was 'She's the Man' purely because I had seen it advertised once and thought it looked quite funny and because I couldn't think of anything else I wanted to watch. Then it appeared on my doorstep and I thought 'Oh well, may as well watch it then!'

She loves football and when the female football squad is cut at her school because not enough girls signed up, she attempts to join the boys squad, much to the amusement of the team captain, Justin (played by Robert Hoffman) who just happens to be Viola's boyfriend - though not for long!
Wanting to prove to Justin, the coach and everybody else who laughed at her, that girls can play ...

...the score and show that she's just as good as the boys. Perfect timing though as Sebastian arrives from London to start school, he ends up on the pitch instead. Not having a clue how to play football, is her cover blown or has she just missed the chance to show them all how good she really is?

Advantages: useful to teachers who are teaching twelfth night Disadvantages: can be a bit tedious
Suited towards young teens, a witty comedy that keeps them entertained. She’s the Man focuses on young Viola who has discovered her team for soccer has been cancelled. She try’s for the boy’s team but is told that she cannot cut it. Viola decides to take her brothers place at his new high school Illyria. From a teachers perspective this film was highly useful (or even as a parent you could help educate your kids) as it is a modern adaptation of Twelfth ... ...is easily shown through the character descriptions and situations that Viola gets her self into. From a film viewers perspective the storyline is somewhat unbelievable (as were most Shakespearian stories) but is cute none the less. The comedy I feel is in the character portrayed by Amanda Byrnes and her over dramatic boy style acting. She acts in such ways that only girls would find amusing and takes the mickey out of the male gender. The film itself ...

The quality of the DVD is good. The menus feature nice pictures of the main characters and there are a number of extra features. the best of these is a specially recorded interview with Richard Armitage, which runs at approx. 20 minutes and is well worth watching. There are also some deleted scenes and two episodes worth on commentary by the director and screen writer.

The cross-gender struggles of Bynes' heroine do offer a few laughs (Sight And Sound, )
DVD Description
In yet another teen-flavoured Shakespeare adaptation, SHE'S THE MAN takes an even lighter approach to TWELFTH NIGHT than the bard himself, but throws a curve ball by mixing its inherent gender-switch romance with a feel-good, 'girl power', sports element. Amanda Bynes (WHAT A GIRL WANTS) is Viola, a high school student who just wants to play soccer, even though her mother (Julie Hagerty) is prepping her for a debutante ball. Just as the girls' soccer team is eliminated from her school, Viola discovers that her brother - also a keen soccer player - is ditching the beginning of the semester to go to London with his band. Disguised as 'manly' as she could possibly be, Viola decides to go in his place and prove that she can make it on the team. However, she doesn't count on falling for the dashing Duke (Channing Tatum, SUPERCROSS), whom she befriends and is forced to reluctantly aid in his wooing of the beautiful and popular, Olivia (Laura Ramsey). Bynes leaps into her role with a broad comic style that works well with this bright, colourful film. The adult roles are handled deftly by Hagerty and Vinnie Jones (SNATCH), as well as David Cross (Arrested Development), who makes the most of his clueless headmaster role with the help of a cavalcade of ridiculous hats.
