Main Characters
Sharpe: played by Sean Bean. Our hero, a rogue officer raised from the ranks.
Harper: played by Daragn O'Malley. A loyal sergeant and friend to Sharpe.
Harris: played by Jason Salkey. The brains behind the chosen men.
Hagman: played by John Tams. Old but reliable member of Sharpe's men.
My Opinion
When I was young I first watched Sharpe, when it was shown on TV in the Mid-90s. I fell in love with it then and have longed to own the set. Now I do I have watched these episodes again and again. I highly recommend Sharpe, whether you're a fan of War and action films, or of Sean Bean, with Sharpe as perhaps one of his greatest roles. It is a bit rough round the edges, as the special effects are not amazing, but the story lines are brilliant and it keeps you wanting more. However, the Sharpe series is regularly repeated on TV, such as UK History on Freeview. The box set has a few extra pieces. Sharpe the Legend for instance is only in the box set, but as I said above it is hardly worth it. There are a few other special features such as photo galleries, fact files and one bit of behind the scenes. It also comes with a map and a collector's edition booklet. The disks are stored in double DVD cases, with well-presented covers and the whole thing is then put in a nice cardboard box. I personally enjoy watching the series as and when I please, without parts being cut out or adverts in the middle or whatever. But as much as I would recommend the Sharpe Series you need to ask yourself whether you wish to purchase the box set or just wait for it to come round on the TV again.

Review of Sharpe (Special Edition) (Box Set) (DVD)
Advantages: Brilliant casting, well researched Disadvantages: none!
...had to have it!
Sharpe is... basically, you're average sargeant in the army who saves wellingtons life from the french, and gets a promotion and a group of surly riflemen to officer at. who really don't like him.
The rest of the story, i'll let you watch and find out for yourself.
Now, this series is based on a set of books by Bernard Cornwell, and these are well worth getting as a companion to the series - it gives you so much more background ... ...get a disk of sharpes career from the point of view Rifleman Cooper. From his beginnings as a sargeant to the Lt Colonel he ended up as, it covers his missions, women and life in general. On each DVD is the pictures reel and the occasinal bloopers real

Advantages: One of it's kind, the best of it's kind Disadvantages: Special effects not brilliant
...set comes with the complete Sharpe series that have been released on DVD, bar the latest adventure in India, which I believe was released after this box set, so you can't really blame them. In the box set I got, there was a free map of 'Sharpe's battles', a good thing for any Sharpe fan I'm sure. Also you get a 'chronicles booklet' which is basically a fans guide to behind the scenes Sharpe and actors profiles.
Now, for those who have never watched ... ...one of his riflemen analysing Sharpe and his life. The characters themselves are brilliantly thought up, in Sharpe's rifles, you have Perkins and Cooper, who are killed off in the first few episodes. The main rifles group are:
Richard Sharpe, the leader
Patrick Harper, a sturdy Irishman full of wonderful sayings, extremely loyal to Sharpe and proves a joy to watch as he saves his captain's life on numerous times
Harris, the one with no first name, ...
