>>>Who are Dreamworks<<< (Pinched from my other recent Dreamworks films reviews) DreamWorks is the animation production and distribution powerhouse behind a string of box office hits including its biggest success the Shrek series as well as computer games and television programmes.
Originally, the project of Steven Spielberg, Jeff Katzenberg and David Geffen in 1994, DreamWorks was sold to Viacom at the end of 2005. DreamWorks is now the strong competitor of Pixar the before undisputed champion of all things animated.
>>>Acting/Voice-overs<<< There is no mistaking Will Smith’s voice. Having recently been irritated by Ben Stiller’s voice in Madagascar, I was concerned the same would be true with this. The thing is, no matter who you are, where you come from or what you are into, you cannot fail to like Smith and the characters he plays. I imagine in his time, Smith was very much like Oscar and like all things, Smith made it seem so natural that the animation and his voice-over simply merged into one and made sense.
Again, I can’t imagine a more appropriate choice for a Mafia leader than Robert De Niro. After all it is a role by now he must be familiar with. The difference of course is that it is much easier to laugh at De Niro as a cartoon shark than as a real “I kill people for fun” Mafia Boss in film because as an audience member you aren’t scared stiff of the menacing man.
I am not a fan of Rene Zellwegger at all. I find her stiff and totally void of any warmth and emotion in just about anything I have seen her in. Don’t even get me started on her squinty-eyed over the shoulder pout! Luckily, I didn’t realize she was in this and it wasn’t until the end of the film after enjoying her character Angie that I realized it was her. It seems with the help of a bit of computer wizardry, she can be brought to life after all!
Jack Black plays the hapless vegetarian son of Don Lino who isn’t really cut out for life as a fierce fish eating shark. He is great in this role simply because no matter how hard you try, it is impossible to imagine a less gangster-like person ever.
Angelina Jolie quite obviously plays the mafia moll/temptress. Of all the characters, hers is the least interesting really and is in fact quite difficult to understand as she speaks in a soft supposedly seductive whisper most of the time. I think most men would be happy to be tempted by Jolie, even as a fish but her character didn’t really add anything special to the film.
>>>Story/Script<<< No one can dispute the idea of a Shark Mafia is a funny one. All the mafia film clichés have translated perfectly to underwater animation and make the whole thing seem utterly ridiculous, which it is when you think about it.
The script writers can take pride in their work on this film. It wasn’t made up of random one-liners that don’t hold together well as is sometimes the case. There was a consistency within the script that made it flow leaving nothing to question. Every scene, every bit of dialogue had a purpose and nothing included was remotely unnecessary.
The written comedy crossed from young to old perfectly with just the right amount of cheekiness thrown in to make kids and grannies alike squeal with the slight naughtiness.
>>>Animation<<< I am quickly running out of things to say about DreamWorks animation. 99% of you will already know they are the leaders in their field. What they can do with computer-generated animation is nothing short of a miracle, at least according to a 30-something mother who struggles to construct a stick figure using word on the PC.
As I have mentioned in previous DreamWorks film reviews, what I think clinches it is the magically expressive features the characters are given. The range of emotion that can be shown is truly amazing which allows the viewer to empathise with the characters.
As the film took place under water, extra attention to detail was needed to ensure the creatures appeared to be underwater. Hair had to flow instead of sitting still as did sparkling gills, which radiated colour as they floated through the water.
The detail that went into to setting the underwater scene was admirable to say the least. 16,000 animated characters were created for the sea-horse race scene alone.
>>>Soundtrack<<< The soundtrack plays a bigger part in this film than is often the case, in fact, I believe the film wouldn’t have been the success it was if it weren’t for the fantastic music that accompanied it.
The star quality of the film follows through to the music with performances put in by Christina Aguilera, - ”Car Wash”, The Pussycat Dolls – “Far as We felt like Going”, Ludicris – “Gold Digger”, and even Ziggy Marley who plays …..singing his father Bob’s song “Three Little Birds”.
The list of feel-good music that will ensure your foot keeps tapping even includes a further bevy of stars. Justin Timberlake and Timberland make an original contribution with “Good Foot” while the remixed Elvis hit “A little less Conversation” and Classic Motown “I can’t help Myself “performed by the Four Tops gets the older audience members singing along. Mary J Blige performs “Keeping it Real” with our film’s hero Will Smith lending his vocals to the song. And of course, who can forget the almost cult-status “You can’t Touch this by baggy trousers poster boy MC Hammer.
The mix of old school classics, be it Reggae, Motown or Pop with the newer Hip Hop and R n’ B vibe has the perfect combination to set the scene and get the audience members pumped no matter what their age.
>>>My thoughts<<< I didn’t expect to like this film at all. It very much seems of late that animated films are being made for the sake of making money and because it was the latest thing actors wanted to have on their CV’s, like taking time out to do theatre of turning their hand to directing. It has felt in many cases that the standard set by films like Toy Story and Shrek just weren’t being met. I fully expected a trumped up try-hard film that would bore me silly. I am now the first to admit I was wrong. This is a light, funny as all get out, smart and well done film with attention to detail making it so great. As soon as we had watched it as a family and before the credits had rolled, my son asked to watch it again and I have to admit, I was more than happy to do so, as I wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye to the characters yet myself.
>>>Trivia<<<
> Christopher Walken was considered for the voice of Luca the Octopus
> Sacha Baron Cohen was considered for one of the Jellyfish
> Don Lino was originally to be played by Supranos star, James Gandolfini but was replaced by Robert De Niro when he dropped out
> For each international release, the role of the news reporter "Katie Current" was recast to a prominent female news anchor of that country. In the UK version she is GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips > The original title was "Sharkslayer", but it was changed to "Shark Tale" about a year before release because Jeffrey Katzenberg thought the title might scare families away
Advantages: Great Animation, good story Disadvantages: None from my Family!

Shark Tale is another great animation from Dreamworks, the makers of the Shrek movies and Madagascar, to name but a few. I first saw this movie and the cinema and I liked it so much that I bought the DVD!
STORYLINE
The movie starts with a cute cartoon worm snagged on a line, at which point you start to wonder whether you are watching the main feature or one of those bonus animations that often precede films of this genre. Enter Lenny the shark ... ...is the Godfather of the shark community, and father of Lenny and Frankie. He has high hopes for his sons to become cold-blooded killers. Sat at a dining table, Don hands Lenny a shrimp to eat. Lenny releases the shrimp and its companions, to the despair of his father.

Advantages: Great for young audiences. Disadvantages: Lack of jokes, animation looks suspect.
^^Summary^^
SharkTale is a computer animation from Dreamworks the makers of ?Shrek?, unfortunately it lacks it big brother?s sparkle and hilarious puns. Following on the heals of ?Finding Nemo? from rivals Pixar, a ?SharkTale? lacks originality, the main characters seem disjointed and they are a not very likeable.
^^Introduction^^
I watched this film on a rental DVD and I would highly recommend anyone to do this first before you think of committing yourself any further. There were some extras on the DVD, but after watching the film I was not really interested in the extras, however they seemed to be aimed at the younger audiences.
^^The Characters^^
A ?SharkTale?s main character is Oscar, who is not a shark, but a wise cracking green and purple fish, in short a fish version of ?The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air?. The other ...
Advantages: Interesting Characters Disadvantages: Not as good as other animated films
As you can probably tell from the number of animated kids films that I have reviewed to date I am a sucker for them so it will not come as a surprise to find out that I was keen to get my hands on SharkTale.
The film, as with all modern animated films is computer generated, resulting in superb quality especially given that is produced by Dreamworks the company famed for brilliant Shrek and the even better Shrek 2.
As with all kids films, the plot is basic with a general moral behind it, this time round the moral being 'don't cry wolf' or more appropriately 'SHARK !'. The central character is Oscar who's voice is provided by the now legendary Will Smith. Oscar is a 'Cheeky Chappy', a bit of a 'Jack the lad so to speak' who works at the Whale Wash - just like car wash except its for Whales - which is owned by Mr Sykes, a puffer fish ...

DVD Description
Will Smith brings hip-hop zest to the voice of Oscar, a fast-talking everyfish who rejects his life at the whale wash and longs for fortune and fame in this animated film from Dreamworks. A combination of FINDING NEMO and GOODFELLAS set in New York, here sharks are old-school gangsters who prey on the local citizenry and hang out in the wreck of the Titanic. Martin Scorsese does the voice of Mr. Sykes, Oscar's blowfish boss, who owes head Shark Don Lino (Robert De Niro) a lot of clams. Don Lino wants to turn over his reign to his two sons, but youngest Lenny (Jack Black) is a closet vegetarian. The plot thickens when Oscar takes credit for the accidental death of Lenny's brother, and suddenly finds the fame and fortune he's been seeking, only it's based on the lie that he's 'the shark slayer'. It's tough not to like this spunky fish story, especially with Scorsese and De Niro verbally one-upping each other in some hilarious bits. Also noteworthy: a pair of hilariously mellow Rastafarian jellyfish (Ziggy Marley and Doug E. Doug) and Peter Falk as an old Tiger Shark who hangs around the Titanic crooning My Heart Will Go On. Renee Zellweger and Angelina Jolie are the females--one pure of heart, one a 'fish fatale' - battling over Oscar's affection. In addition to all that, there should be enough goofy humour, action, and goofing to keep the kids riveted.
