Imperial Guard Chon Wang finds himself on a mission to the Wild West when Princess Pei-Pei is persuaded to leave the Forbidden City, to avoid an arranged marriage. Instead of finding the new life she was promised, she finds herself enslaved and it is up to Chon to release her.
More of an action comedy than a martial arts epic, Jackie Chan does what he does best - entertains. His brand of of comedy kung-fu has found him fans the world over and looking at this film, it's no wonder.
This is another film that successfully trades on the buddy movie format. Upon arrival in the States, the train carrying the ransom for the princess is ambushed by inept bandit Roy Bannon and his gang. Betrayed by his band of thieves, Bannon gets involved with Wang and after a few initial spats, they get on with the business of liberating the girl and the gold.
This is arguably the best English-language film Jackie Chan has so far made. It has a sharp and funny script, enough action set-pieces to keep his long-standing fans interested and enough Buster Keaton-style comedy to bring him new ones.
The thing that really makes this film tick is his relationship with co-star Owen Wilson, who plays Bannon. You get the impression that they really enjoyed working together and became great friends as a result. No wonder a sequel is being planned. Wilson's laid-back, spiritual cowboy is the perfect foil to Chan's twitchy would-be warrior. And he brings a lot of comedy to the film, with his reflections on life and his inability to hit anything he shoots at. Lucy Liu also puts in a good performance as the spoilt, high-kicking princess.
Although there is a lot of violence in this film, it all has a cartoonish edge to it and nobody seems to get hurt. You might want to stop your kids from copying the action sequences though; judging by the out-takes in the end credits, a lot of the mistakes were very painful!
This is the sort of film you should watch if you want a good laugh with a few mates and a large amount of popcorn, assuming of course you like slapstick, one-liners and some good old chopsocky! It's an excellent romp that will leave you feeling uplifted and ready to pack your wagons and roll west!
