A Western with a difference, maybe it should be called an Eastern. This well produced comical film stars Jackie Chan as an imperial guard from the Forbidden City in 1800s China. Not only is he a guard but also a servant, and what's more he is in love with the Princess Pei Pei.
The story revolves around the Princess leaving China and heading off to America. She thinks that the man who helps her escape her old lifestyle is a friend, but the Emperor is left a note indicating that in reality she has been kidnapped and the usual ransom demands are made in exchange for her life. Once in America the Princess realises what is going on when she comes face to face with an old adversary and traitor to the Forbidden City and her father The Emperor.
Jackie Chan in the role of Chon Wan, ( John Wayne ) manages to get permission to go to America with a few other guards on the mission to pay the ransom and return the Princess, but things don't go as planned. On the journey whilst in the old west, Chon's uncle who is the imperial interpreter is shot and killed, and this in turn sends Chon on a mission of his own to get the killer. Through a sequence of bizarre and quite funny happenings he befriends Roy, a very suave cowboy would be gangster and even ends up married to an Indian chiefs daughter.
Things move quickly from here as Chon and Roy pursue the Princess and the gold. Without any let up they wade through gun fights and bar brawls, get locked up and even hung, but fortunately Chon's new wife also has a mission, to protect him.
All in all this movie has all the trimmings of a traditional western mixed with Jackie Chan's humour and unique martial arts style along with some sword play, and as with all his great films he saves the day. And as with all good Westerns, the good guy walks off into the sunset with the girl. Outstanding.

Good review - BUT Why do you mention 'DVD' in the title (you did not need to) if you don't mention anything about the extra features on the DVD in your op? This is just a straight - and good - review of the movie, yeah?
