poking fun both at the kung-fu genre and his own earlier style. Spoof is very much the intent of Shanghai Noon and its score. It is, after all, a Jackie Chan flick in which his character Chon Wang (!) travels to the Wild West to rescue a kidnapped Chinese princess. The collision of musical forms bubbles along for a few cues, but then suddenly pipes up with the Elmer Bernstein approach to Western heroic fanfares mingled with harmonica in "From East To West". Chan's hero theme established, the rest of the hour long album is a constant expectation foiler, jumping between good ol' Western adventure, rhythm and rock cool ("Becoming a Cowboy in Carson City"), and delicate ensemble playing from a collection of oriental instrumentation (pipa, ruan, gin, erhu, dizi, and xiano). The composer's preference for doubling or overdubbing live playing with synths fortunately doesn't spoil the comedy. --Paul Tonks

Aah, another Owen Wilson movie for me to review!
--- Cast. --- Chon Wang - Jackie Chan. (Rush Hour 1, 2 & 3, The Tuxedo.) Roy O'Bannon - Owen Wilson. (Zoolander, Behind Enemy Lines, The Haunting.) Princess Pei Pei - Lucy Liu. (Charlies Angels, Ally McBeal, Kill Bill: Vol. 1) Falling Leaves - Brandon Merrill. (A model for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.) Lo Fong - Roger Yuan. (Bulletproof Monk.) Nathan Van Cleef - Xander Berkeley. (24, Candyman, Storytelling.)
--- Plot. --- 1881. When Princess Pei Pei (Lucy Liu) is kidnapped from Forbidden City, China, Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) is sent to America with 3 other guards to give the ransom money to her kidnapper Lo Fong, and retrieve the Princess. When Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson) and his gang of incompetent outlaws rob the train the Chinese guards are riding and kill Chon's uncle, he goes after them for revenge. Finally catching up with Roy, who is buried up to his neck in the desert, Chon Wang (pronounced "John Wayne") leaves him a pair of chopsticks to dig himself out with in return for directions to Carson City, where the Princess is being held. What he doesn't know is that Roy has sent him the wrong way, and along this journey Chon finds himself married to an Indian girl - Falling Leaves - and once again, involved in a Saloon brawl with Roy, who has miraculously managed to dig himself out of the sand. The two men find themselves in jail, where they begin to bond. When Roy hears of the reward for rescuing the Princess he invites himself along on Chon's quest, and with the help of Chon's new bride, they break out of jail. Now they are wanted men, but they must get to Carson City to save Princess Pei Pei. Along the way they find themselves fighting bad guys, narrowly escaping death and playing drinking games in the bathtub! When they eventually get to the Princess, things are more complicated - she doesn't want to return to China, she wants to stay in America and help the people. But Lo Fong is not going to let her go that easily, and predictably, the film ends with a big battle involving lots of specialised martial arts action from Jackie Chan.
--- My Opinion. --- My first thought when the film ended was "Oh look, Owen Wilson just played Dignan from Bottle Rocket again." If anybody's seen the film Bottle Rocket (Owen and his brother Luke's debut) you'll know what I mean. Roy O'Bannon is very similar to Owen's character Dignan in that. Dignan wanted to be a criminal like Roy wants to be an outlaw, except neither characters are actually any good at it. They are good at talking, but when it comes down to it, both characters are too nice to really shoot or rob people.
My completely unbiased opinion - Roy O'Bannon is a fantastic character. He's desperate to be an outlaw, to be a wanted man with a reward on his head. He's good at talking and spinning his guns, but he can't actually hit anything he shoots! I must admit this is the first Jackie Chan movie I've ever seen, and it's definitely left me wanting to see more. Chon Wang ("John Wayne? That's a terrible name for a cowboy. That's never gonna work!") is brilliant too as the naive and sweet Chinaman, the complete opposite of Roy, they spark off each other well. Lucy Liu, however, is not good in this film. She does not seem comfortable in the role of Princess Pei Pei, nor does she make the character in the slightest bit believeable and the chemistry between her and Jackie Chan is non-existant. I did enjoy her line at the very beginning of the film about her supposed beau being a "toad" though!
I'll happily admit this is not my usual type of film at all - I cannot stand westerns or martial arts type films, and as a mix of the two I was absolutely positive I was going to hate it. So I needed a pretty good reason to buy this in the first place - Owen Wilson, obviously! This is one of the funniest films I've seen in a long time. I laughed all the way through, have happily watched it 3 times in the past week and even persuaded my friend, who hates Owen Wilson, to watch it!
My keen eye for spotting movie mistakes picked up on Owen's fake tan. It generally changes colour throughout the entire film, but in a scene towards the end, just after Chon and Roy have escaped being hung and they're standing at a lake, Roy's shirt has a few buttons open and just look at that tan line around his neck!
--- Humour. --- I'll include some quotes, as usual...
Roy: You gotta be able to laugh at stuff like that. Like me in the desert. I don't hold any grudges. I laugh about it. I'm not angry at you. You just left me there with chopsticks to die. Roy, all by his lonesome, just me and the buzzards, pickin' at my head... You're a very silent man, aren't you?
Roy: Oooh... Who's the pretty lady? Chon: That's my wife. Roy: How long you been in this country? Chon: Four days. Roy: Nice work.
Chon: You gave me bad directions! Roy: No, I gave you wrong directions.
Roy : Yes Chon, I've heard all about the Emperor. Must be one heck of a guy. Chon: He's only twelve. Roy: That's just great. You're hanging here, waiting to die for some guy whose balls haven't even dropped yet!
Roy: Did I hit you? Nathan Van Cleef: No, but you're getting really close. Roy: You've almost killed me like 17 times already. (Nathan shoots again) Roy: 18, 19, 20. You're on fire today!
--- Other Stuff. --- Year: 2000. Time Running: 106 Minutes. Cert: 12. Director: Tom Dey. (Also directed a TV series called The Hunger and 2002 film Showtime.)
DVD Features: Audio commentary by Jackie Chan, Owen Wilson and Tom Dey, Outtakes, Behind The Scenes featurette and the music video for Uncle Kracker's Yeah Yeah Yeah.
Buy It: I got my VHS version for the ridiculously low price of £1.99 on Ebay, but you can get it at Amazon.co.uk - DVD - £17.09, VHS - £11.69, although Marketplace prices start from £3, and I've recently seen this in WH Smith around the £10 mark.

I have to mention that the sequel to this - Shanghai Knights - is even funnier than the first, and it also happens to be my next review, so keep coming back!
Shangai Noon is the film Rush Hour was meant to be, a hilarious, frenetic action/comedy which sees Jackie form a believable partnership with an American comedy actor. The fight scenes and stunts are excellent as always and the physical comedy is tremendous. Even the script is decent providing laugh after laugh.
The film tells the story of Princess Pei Pei played by Lucy Liu. She is frustrated at life in the Forbidden City and is duped into running ... ...an evil traitorous profiteer. Jackie plays an Imperial guard known as Chon Wang (to sound like John Wayne). He sets out for the west to rescue the princess and falls in with Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson) a laidback outlaw. Together they must survive the evil badguy, a scary posse hunting them, the other Imperial guards and even Roy's old gang.
Jackie Chan is a world superstar and deservedly so, although his success in America has been more recent. ...

Advantages: Excellent all rounder without the excessive use of bad language etc... Disadvantages: None.
A Western with a difference, maybe it should be called an Eastern. This well produced comical film stars Jackie Chan as an imperial guard from the Forbidden City in 1800s China. Not only is he a guard but also a servant, and what's more he is in love with the Princess Pei Pei.
The story revolves around the Princess leaving China and heading off to America. She thinks that the man who helps her escape her old lifestyle is a friend, but the Emperor ... ...been kidnapped and the usual ransom demands are made in exchange for her life.
Once in America the Princess realises what is going on when she comes face to face with an old adversary and traitor to the Forbidden City and her father The Emperor.
Jackie Chan in the role of Chon Wan, ( John Wayne ) manages to get permission to go to America with a few other guards on the mission to pay the ransom and return the Princess, but things don't go as planned.

Advantages: Everything! Disadvantages: none, this really is the best film ever
Shanghai Noon is one of Jackie Chan's best movies ever! I have watched it about 5 times already and still want to watch it again!
The film gets of to an 'interesting' start with the director setting the story, it starts in China and you learn what the characters are (imperial guards) and of course you learn about princess pei pei. Princess pei pei wants to leave the forbidden kingdom where she lives and accepts the help of a man in the city. Thinking ... ...him. When princess pei pei arrives at her destination in the west she finds out that she has been kidnapped for a ransom! The kidnappers want gold, and lots of it! Three imperial guards are chosen to go and rescue the princess. Jackie Chan, an imperial guard, was not chosen, but forced them to let him go with them.
Next you see them on a train, heading for the west... when the local group of outlaws rob the train! One of the team of outlaws shot ...

Advantages: Jackie talks english, good acting, amazing action and is very funny too Disadvantages: none
This movie in my opinion is more of a comedy than a martial arts film although Jackie Chan gives the usual dose of breathtaking fights and stunts. It is one of the best action comedies that Hollywood has churned out in the last few years.
The plot follows Chinese Imperial Guard Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) on his mission to find the stunning Princess Pei Pei (Lucy Lui). This film being a comedy even the names are involved in some of the gags. Chans characters ... ...is often refered to as Princess Pee Pee. On his way to her rescue her he runs into charming Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson) a very laid-back outlaw. They find themselves stumbling from one one fight to another while providing a lot of laughs on the way.
This is one of the few films that Jackie Chan actually speaks English in. This itself provides some laughs due to the inclusion of outakes at the end of the movie where Jackie often mucks up his lines. ...

The Movie
This starts with Jackie Chan as Imperial Guard Chon Wang (which, when he states his name later in the movie to Wilsons's character, O'Bannon, gets mistaken for being John Wayne), who travels to the Wild West of America to try and rescue the beautiful kidnapped princess Pei Pei (played by Lucy Liu). The fun really starts when he accidentally gets caught up in a bungled train robbery, headed by the outlaw cowboy Roy O'Bannon (played by Owen Wilson) and the two of them end up becoming mismatched partners. At first Roy isn't so sure but once he becomes aware of the plight of Pei Pei, the two of them join forces and end up enduring time in jail, bar brawls and plenty ...
