This is a film which I had recommend to me as I had enjoyed a similar one before. I have to say that I was quite impressed with it.
The film stars Alan Ladd who plays the role of Shane, he is a gunfighter who stumbles across a small homestead where he is offered food. He manages to befriend the family, Joe, Marian and their son Joey after he helps them stand up to a cattle baron, Rufus Ryker. Shane is offered work with the family and soon find himself at home with them.
Things go bad for the family when Rufus tells them and all the other homestead owners that he has got a new massive cattle contract so he wants their land. The families are not prepared to give up their land though. Shane and Joe decided that they will not be moved and call a meeting with the other homestead owners and they all decide that they will stand up to Rufus and fight.
Things get worse when Rufus hires a gun hand to help persuade the people to move. Will Joe and Shane be able to keep their homestead and land of will Rufus get his way and win?
The story to this film was very good if not a little predictable. I thought that Alan Ladd who played the lead role of Shane did a great job and it was so nice to see another lead role in a cowboy film instead of John Wayne. He managed to bring a lot to his role and show many sides to his character. He was hard and tough with the gun fighters but then he would be soft and friendly to young Joey which I thought gave the film a bit of depth. The supporting actors included Van Heflin who played the role of Joe Starrett and he did a great job and worked well with Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur who played the role of Marian, Joe’s wife and a young Brandon DeWilde who played their son Joey. I thought Joey was rather wooden but he was only young so this can be forgiven.
The film was set in the late 1800’s and I thought that a lot of time and attention was put into the sets and costumes throughout the film and they all did look very realistic and made the film. The music was good if not the best I have heard in a western but it was appropriate for the places which it was used.
The effects in this film, bearing in mind that it was made in 1953 were indeed very good. The film was mainly shot on location and this was noticeable throughout. I did not once see a bad backdrop where a painted board had been placed behind the actors and I think this is what made the film so good. There were some wonderful views in the film over the country side and I did find them very enjoyable to see.
There were some good fight scenes in the film but the only problem was at times you could clearly see that they were not hitting each other and I did find this made the scenes quite funny instead of dramatic which is what they were trying to get across. I also found that the furniture in the bare seemed to break rather easily when smashed over somebody, I did not mind this though as it made for better viewing in my opinion and added some much needed light heartedness to the film.
The film was actually based on a novel by Jack Schaefer and was also called Shane but I have not read this and in fact I did not even know about it until it was mentioned on the DVD. I have not read the book so cannot make any comments on how well it was adapted to the film.
The DVD which we have has a running time of 113 minutes and the certificate is a PG and I do agree with this.
There are no extra features on the DVD which we have, this is not great loss to me as I am not into watching them anyway. We paid around the £5 mark for our DVD on EBay so do shop around for a good price.
I am going to recommend this film as it does have a good story, great acting and it does not star John Wayne!
Advantages: Some good music and humour, and a lot of Shane Disadvantages: That terrible toothless laugh!

DVD Description
George Stevens' classic Western, adaptated from the Jack Schaefer novel, stars Alan Ladd in the title role. Riding the ranges of Wyoming's Grand Tetons, Shane stops at the farm of homesteader Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) just before Ryker (Emile Meyer), a powerful and predatory cattleman, arrives with his hired muscle to make the farmer a threatening offer for land that he intends to get by any means necessary. When Shane lets the cattle baron know that his gun will back Starrett if there's any trouble, the grateful homesteader offers the stranger a job as a hired hand, which he accepts. Joe's young son Joey (Brandon de Wilde) is drawn to the quiet stranger, whose difference from the men he knows is confirmed by the accidental revelation of a gunfighter's lightning reflexes. Shane becomes a valuable asset to the farm, but is slowly drawn into the continuing hostilities between the two opposing groups. To complicate matters, Shane feels an unspoken, and unwanted, attraction to Starrett's wife Marian (Jean Arthur). This creates a sense of ambivalence in Joe, whose son already idolizes the gunslinger. Stevens' meticulous artistry imbues the simple Western with the mythic aura of an Arthurian legend, as Loyal Griggs' beautifully composed images provide the canvas for career performances by Ladd, Heflin, Arthur, and de Wilde, in what many regard as the finest western ever made.
