RESERVOIR
Review of Reservoir Dogs (Wide Screen) by  soypeter

Advantages: ------
Disadvantages: ------

...An epochal movie that still stands up to repeat viewings, if only so you can relive Steve 'Mr Pink' Buscemi's rant against indiscriminate tipping or freeze-frame the denouement to work out exactly who shot who first. You probably don't need telling that Reservoir Dogs is about a mis-matched posse of hired crims on a bungled diamond heist. Tim 'Mr.Orange' Roth spends the entirety of the film lying in a pool of blood, Michael 'Mr.Blonde' Madsen chops off a cop's ear, and Tarantino's study in the ' aesthetic of violence' is complemented by stylish black suits and shades, while K-Billy's 'Sound Of The Seventies' plays in the background. The DVD features include an interview with Tarantino about how the movie would never had been made without Harvey Keitel's intervention. A special box set is also available for £29.99 - the package includes... Read review

DVD Description

Set in the underground world of Los Angeles card sharks and gamblers, this slick neo-noir is a gripping ensemble drama that pays homage to hard-boiled heist directors like Mamet and Scorsese. SHADE, a gambling term for deception and trickery, revolves around a ring of small-time hustlers with dreams of the big payoff. Tiffany (Thandie Newton) is a beautiful and calculating swindler who works together with her partner Charlie (Gabriel Byrne) in nickel-and-dime schemes. But when one card shark, The Dean (Sylvester Stallone), seems to be unbeatable, they devise a scheme to topple his flawless run. They recruit Tiffany's old flame, Vernon (Stuart Townsend) a card mechanic and sleight-of-hand genius and hustler Jennings (Jamie Foxx) to manoeuvre their way on to The Dean's poker table. But all is not what it seems in this twisting and turning thriller: deception abounds. Secret love affairs and allegiances are kindled, and The Dean, whom everyone is trying to hustle, plays a dirty game with the help of his ex-girlfriend, Eve (Melanie Griffith). In a game of who's cheating whom, each player becomes a pawn in another's swindle. Debut writer-director Damian Nieman films the card tricks with flair, making the poker-faced manipulations visible to the viewer and adding to the high stakes tension of the film.

Not for the faint hearted!
Review of Fight Club by  DunkWho

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Too much of everything except entertainment

...I ordered the 2 disk Fight Club DVD from the states based on the reviews of the film and DVD that I'd read. Now maybe its just me but i considered switching this off after an hour or so but kept on just incase it was about to turn around and entertain me. It didnt. Im not giving anything away about the film when I say that its about a load of blokes fighting, but to have such large numbers of guys knocking 3 shades out of each other for fun before going mental and ... well i wont go too far into the film, but basically it went from the ridiculos to the insane in an hour or so. Ive sold this DVD on rather than keep it in my collection - Im that sure that Ill never watch it again!... Read review

TOP NOTCH STALLONE
Review of Copland DVD by  TRABZON

Advantages: Stallone
Disadvantages: Few

...At last Stallone is given a part that tests his acting ability and he excels as the reluctant hero Sheriff(shades of Gary Cooper)of New York suburb populated by corrupt cops.It is a taut thriller with great narrative tension. The acting from all the cast is superb and what a cast.De Niro actually has little to do as the hard bitten internal affairs officer on the trail of corrupt Cop Harvey Keitel who is grimly menacing throughout. Ray Liotta plays an ambivalent sidekick to Keitel who ultimately sees the error of his ways. But it is the sensitive moralistic Sheriff who steals the show.... Read review
