The british movie industry has hit an all time low with Jonny Vegas's big screen debut... and no doubt his last. we can all hope.
Ferris *Mackenzie Crook) and Dave (Jonny Vegas) star as the bird chasing, self-provlaiming "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" of Birmingham in this £3million British comedy about two lowlifes with active fantasy sex lives who deliver potatoes to various restaurants and grocers. Really imaginative name for the movie, don't you think?
Reviving the confessions of 1970s sex romps genre isn't a bad idea, but these films aren't easy to make as they appear. So while there are a few funny lines of dialog and a tiny whiff of charm in the cast, this is like a bad sitcom stretched on and on as it stumbles throuh each tasteless scene, literally scraping the barrel for laughs that never come.
Despite a continuous stream of sex talk and sex scenes of every style imaginable, the film isn't remotely sexy, but then a semi naked Jonny Vagas really is something to throw up in your nachos over. However this film has that oddly British ability to be rampant and overwhelmingly timid at the same time, every bed scene is played as slapstick, usually of the gross-out variety. It couldn't be any more joyless really.
The cast don't seem to understand that the film is a stinker, so they play their moronic characters fairly straight, almost pausing for the laughter just like a sketch-show.
Sex Lives of the Potato Men looks more like a failed TV pilot than a feature film. The story is not very funny and fells moore like a number of comedy sketches pulled together with some slight filling in between. In fact the movie just ends without any real conclusions but on a brighter side at just eighty-three minutes you'll be out of the cinema (or your arm chair) and driving home before you know it.
