show. The four highly sexed thirtysomethings share their hopes, fears and even boyfriends (when Charlotte decides to throw a "used boyfriend party") in a New York where you can buy Manolo Blahniks on the proceeds of one article a week and eat mountains of junk food yet stay as thin as a pencil. But if the peripheral details remain somewhat fantastical, the searing honesty of the main storyline takes this third season to dramatic heights only suggested by the previous seasons. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) falls head-over-heels for chunky furniture designer Aidan Joff (John Corbett) but still embarks on a disastrous affair with her newlywed ex, Mr Big (Chris Noth). The resulting triangle, set against the background of Charlotte's outwardly perfect marriage to Trey (Kyle MacLachlan), proves to be electrifying viewing. But the humour is as sharp as ever too: Samantha's run-in with her drag-queen prostitute neighbours, Miranda pretending to be an air stewardess so as not to frighten men away and one of Charlotte's boyfriends talking dirty to her in bed are all moments of great high comedy. It just gets better and better. --Warwick Thompson

INTRODUCTION Back in 2000 this was literally my favourite TV program. Trust me if I missed it I was literally inconsolable, so buying the DVD’s was an absolute must. However, then university kicked in and inevitable so did the student budget, so I was buying these series by series. I am now up to series 5 but can honestly put my hand on my heart and say this is my favourite. So, what makes the DVD so great? Well….not all that much actually. This is a TV show that holds its own without needing to rely on DVD extras to sell it. Yes, the picture quality is extremely good, and in terms of selecting an episode the convenience factor is a bonus! So, if I’m not all that keen on the DVD extras, which consist of a tiny 5 minute featurette, what is it that really sells this DVD to me?
CHARACTERS ‘Sex and the City’ tells the tale of four exceptional New York women. Before starting to look at their characterisation New York has to be mentioned. New York almost makes the fifth main character, as without it the characters would simply not be the same. The sheer excitement that the city offers is reflected upon the characters and their individual profiles. So, who are these women?
CARRIE BRADSHAW- is played by Sarah Jessica Parker and could be the lead character. She is a New York magazine columnist, who writes a weekly sex column which is really a reflection of her own life. The actual series is told through her eyes, she does many voice overs. In every single episode she is going out with someone, be it her long time fling MR BIG (Chris Noth) or another New York gentleman. In this review I do not want to make too many references to past series, so the characters may seem a little hard to describe and understand. Having split up with Mr Big at the end of the second series Carrie now finds herself with Aiden, a furniture designer who features through out the series. However, as the series develops Carrie finds herself drawn back to Mr Big….but will she stay with Aiden? By episode 18 it seems that this relationship is yet another in a long line of ones not destined to work out, but hey, there are always shoes to go at!
MIRANDA HOBBS- is played by Cynthia Nixon and is in essence a stark contrast to Carrie’s character. She is a top city lawyer and has a sharp wit to go with the job. As the series develops it becomes clear that she is Carrie’s best friend, although they are literally opposites. Since the first series she has been with Steve Brady, a local barman, but there relationship is on and off in this series. She is conscious that her biological clock is ticking, and compounded by the fact she has a lazy ovary as well is seriously considering her future as a single woman. However, the right man never quite comes along, and she is left considering if Steve is really THE ONE? Miranda is a truly inspirational character, a true independent female in the city of New York.
CHARLOTTE YORK- is played by Kristen Davis and is a complete contrast to both Carrie and Miranda. Where the previous two women are independent females, Charlotte simply is not. She works in a art gallery and lives in a plush Park Avenue apartment, and is only really interested in dating men of a ‘certain type.’ This type of man she finds in Trey McDougal, and half of the series deals with the build up to their wedding. But the question is can Charlotte actually marry her ideal Park Avenue man and ignore his problems in the bedroom department? This is how the series leaves her.
SAMANTHA JONES- is played by Kim Cattrall and is as outrageous as Miranda is independent. She runs her own successful PR firm, and is the only one of the girls who isn’t looking for a relationship. In fact she is the complete opposite, preferring to keep the single life going while she can. Her sexual exploits add the comedy to the program, even though at times the audience feels rather sorry for her as this lifestyle does not sometimes seem to make her all that happy. Samantha is known all over New York, both for being easy to get into bed and for being extremely good at her PR job, a recipe for success in New York.
Over all the four main characters carry the show completely. Their four separate though intertwined lives make for compelling viewing, and the series is unstoppable to watch.
PLOT Rather than give away the plot I feel it is better to give the episode title, as I really don’t want to ruin the whole series for anyone who has yet to watch it!
1) Where theres smoke- the introduction to the series 2) Politically erect- Carrie starts dating a well known politician 3) Attack of the 5’ 10” Woman- Mr Big dates a tall woman 4) Boy, girl, boy, girl 5) No Ifs and or Butts 6) Are we Sluts? 7) Drama Queen 8) The Big Time- Carrie and Mr Big begin a secret affair 9) Easy come, Easy go 10) All or Nothing 11) Running with Scissors- has Aiden found out about Carrie’s affair? 12) Don’t ask, don’t tell 13) Escape from New York- the girls go to the Hamptons 14) Sex and Another City 15) Hot Child in the City 16) Frenemies 17) What goes around Comes Around 18) Cock a Doodle Do!
So that’s it, a complete 18 episode series on three DVD’s. Retails from HMV for £24.99, though it prices differ between the different high street stores. Overall a must buy for anyone who wants cheering up, a genuinely feel good box set, well worth a purchase!
Advantages: great to watch! good fun! Disadvantages: Disc 3 a little dull
Series Three Sex and the City, Eighteen Episodes on Three Discs. My thoughts:
I am slowly but surly making my way through the Sex and the City box sets, Series three is really exciting for the fist two discs but I did find disc three slightly dull in comparison. In this series we see Carrie meet and fall in love with Aiden, a perfectly gorgeous classic American guy who is totally in love with her, but Carrie mucks everything up by starting an affair ... ...it out first. Samantha's sex scenes are getting more raunchy in this series and we watch as her and Charlotte come to blows on several occasions because of their mixed opinions about the meaning of sex. It is hard to watch these scenes, as they are quite brutal and cutting towards each other, they really know how to push each other's buttons, but of course as best friends do they sort it out in the end. Miranda and Steve break up, this is really ...

Advantages: every episode from series Disadvantages: no extra features
Like the 2nd season of Sex and the City (but unlike the first), Season 3 consists of 18 episodes. After all the drama of the 2nd season, particularly surrounding Carrie and Big, you wouldn't be blamed for thinking that the 3rd season would calm things down a bit. Oh no.
The first episode of the season opened with a bang, as the 4 girls travel to Staten Island to attend the NYC's Fire Department Calender Contest. Samantha decides that this would ... ...later seasons. These episodes took the show a step forward. There is still all the sex that we found in the first two seasons, but yet here there is a lot of heart as well. All in all, season 3 is a pivotal season to the show as a whole. ...
