Now i'll turn my hand to a little video nasty! Hardly but a little more of a creepy one than I usually review.
So what's it all about? -------------------------------
'Session 9' is a film made in 2001 and is directed by Brad Anderson (The machinist).
The film is a psychological thriller set around Danvers State Mental Hopsital and is focussed on a team of asbestos removal specialists who are somewhat obstructed in the path of completing their work by a few odd occurances in the old Hospital. The team are given a strict deadline that their leaders Gordon (Peter Mullan) and Phil (David Caruso) are in disagreement over the realism of the goal. Gordon is going through some personal turmoil and seems determined to take his mind off of this by getting his team working extremely hard.
A subplot to the group dynamic is that Phil's ex girlfriend actually left him for one of the other team members, Hank (Josh Lucas), and Phil is permenently on the back of Hank giving him grief over anything he can to feel like he has some form of control to compensate for the embarassment that a colleague is with his ex.
The studious Mike (Stephen Gevedon) a failed lawyer that makes up part of the team is trying to uncover a bit of a mystery. When checking an electrical problem, he comes across a box labeled 'evidence.' He finds a load of tapes all labelled with 'Session' followed by a number from one through to nine (hence the title), and he listens to the tapes one by one and finds out that there was a pretty bad occurance involving a patient that has some form of multiple personality disorder.
The final team member is Jeff (Brendon Sexton III) who is the nephew of Gordon, is a jovial young character that is constanlty messing about rather than keeping his mind on the job. He is rather scared of the dark which is somewhat problematic when you are working in an old shut down building that happens to be a former asylum!
Strange things begin to happen to the team and it becomes increasingly clear that someone or something does not want the team to be on the site. Each team member starts to get paranoid and the stakes being to rise.
Is it any good? --------------------
The film is very clearly filmed on a pretty tight budget because although it has some recognisable faces in Peter Mullan (My Name is Joe, Braveheart) and David Caruso (CSI Series) it has no fancy effects and doesn't have the polished sheen of a Hollywood film. This is not a bad thing by any means because it helps create the raw, edgy feel to the film which helps create a tense atmosphere.
The film begins in a state of calm and builds tension and cranks up the pressure as the film progresses. The audience gets a real feel for the general state of paranoia surrounding the asbestos removers, and the director should be congratulated on this.
The two main stars Mullan and Caruso are both excellent in their respective roles. Mullan particularly excels in helping the audience feel some empathy for the emotional toil he is feeling, whereas Caruso cleverly plays his somewhat sneaky and difficult to appreciate character with consumate professionalism.
Session 9 is by no means a masterpiece but from a viewing point of view it delivers. If you have low expectations of a low budget film than I am very confident that you will find this both entertaining and pretty tense. If you prefer more ubeat films then I would definitely recommend that you choose not to watch!
Sounds great, where can I get it? ---------------------------------------------
Session 9 is available for £4.99 from play.com. At this price I would very much recommend the purchase because this would represent an excellent value purchase and should not disappoint.
