against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Directed by David Von Ancken (The Shield, CSI) Seraphim Falls is a visceral study of revenge and a bloody account of the aftermath of war. Combining the raw brutality of FIRST BLOOD with the mesmerizing savage beauty of COLD MOUNTAIN, this is a film that will leave audiences gasping, and on the edge of their seats. Its been five years since the end of the American Civil War. Somewhere deep within the snowy mountains of the American West a lone figure - Gideon (PIERCE BROSNAN) sits in front of a fire, lost in thought. Abruptly, he is pulled out of his reverie by the echo of a Henry rifle and a bullet puffing into the snow inches from his head. With no time to react another shot rings out. It connects with Gideon's shoulder and whips him to the ground. Instantly Gideon calculates his one chance of survival. To leave everything he owns and run for the cover of the nearby fir trees ? his blood leaving a crimson trail in the snow? So begins the thrilling first act of SERAPHIM FALLS, and the final stage of Colonel Morsman Carvers (LIAM NEESON) terrible revenge - to hunt down and kill Gideon, no matter what it takes. There will be many men dead before these two meet face to face, and only then will Carver fully comprehend the full cost of his undertaking. Launched by a gunshot and propelled by rage, the relentless pursuit will take them both far from the comforts and codes of civilization and into the unforgiving wilderness. The emotional conclusion to this odyssey comes after a bloody climax in which both men are forced to confront their past and travel deep within the recesses of their souls. SERAPHIM FALLS - a taut action film, an epic chase and primal battle set in the mythic landscape of the West.

Thecivil war has ended but Colonel Morsman Carver (Neeson) is on onefinal mission: to kill Gideon (Brosnan) no matter what it takes.Launched by a gunshot and propelled by rage, the relentless pursuittakes them both far from the comforts and codes of civilization, into the bloodiest recesses of their own souls. Frequent television director David Von Ancken ( Ozand The Shield) offers a thrilling meditation on the truenature of revenge with this post-Civil War era tale of a one man'squest to put his nemesis in the ground, and another man's struggleto survive at any cost. Deep in the snowy mountains of the AmericanWest, a lone man named Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) basks, lost inthought, in the warm glow of a small fire. When a shot suddenlyrings out and a bullet whizzes just inches from his head, Gideon issuddenly pulled from his repose. His reaction is too slow, however,to save him from the impact of a second bullet fired immediatelythereafter; a bullet that painfully lodges itself into the softflesh of Gideon's tired shoulder. The man who fired these bulletsis Colonel Morsman Carver (Liam Neeson), and Carver's goal is tohunt Gideon down like an animal and extract painful revenge for apast transgression that left Colonel Carver forever changed. Fromthis point on, there will be no peace in either man's life as aharrowing game of kill-or-be-killed is played out against thebackdrop of the awe-inspiring and deceptively treacherouswilderness where the unforgiving law of the land takes deadlyprecedence over the civility of modern society. hired posse, including Pope (Robert Baker) and Parsons (Ed Lauter), to track down Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) through the snow-covered woods of the Ruby Mountains in New Mexico. While his posse is in it for the money, Carver appears to have more personal reasons for going after Gideon--and demanding that he be taken alive. But in David Von Ancken's exciting Western, the audience is kept in the dark for most of the movie as to just why Carver is so determined to hunt Gideon down and meet him face-to-face. In fact, the script, written by Von Ancken and Abby Everett Jacques, also keeps viewers guessing about which of them might be the hero and which the villain, blurring the distinction between good and evil. Gorgeously filmed by John Toll, SERAPHIM FALLS is a stunning film to look at, enhanced by Harry Gregson-Williams's beautiful score and the vast expanse of the wide-open locations. Mixing in elements of such classic Westerns as THE SEARCHERS and UNFORGIVEN (among other Clint Eastwood films) with such survival thrillers as FIRST BLOOD and THE NAKED PREY, television director Von Ancken (OZ, NUMB3RS, COLD CASE) makes a compelling feature-film debut. Neeson and Brosnan are both outstanding in their difficult, complex roles, particularly the latter as he takes on numerous physical challenges, and Oscar winner Anjelica Huston pops up in an unusual way, playing a mysterious woman who likes to make very interesting deals.

Advantages: Fascinating - great chase scenes. Disadvantages: Not much of a storyline.
a 'miracle cure-all' brew in the middle of the desert, and an Indian philosopher who guards a waterhole.
As Gideon whittles his pursuers down to a single man, Carver, the reasons for the hunt will become clearer and Gideon will finally have to face the ghosts of SeraphimFalls.
Nebulous summary of the storyline? I agree - but it can't be helped. This is the case of a movie being based on a single event, and disclosure of this event turns this movie into a pointless and boring stretch of scenes that will no doubt appear endless. The only way to truly appreciate this movie is by not knowing why Carver and his men are hunting Gideon.
Although a simple storyline that relies on the viewer's ignorance of the plot, the 'hunting' scenes are extremely engrossing and the acting superb.

Advantages: Liam Neeson Disadvantages: Long, tedious, story not great.
The film starts with Pierce Brosnan crouching over a fire in a forest up a snowy mountain, when all of a sudden he is shot. He flees and his pursuers appear. Liam Neeson and his hired crew are after Pierce and Neeson is ruthless in seeking revenge. Brosnan's character is the unluckiest character alive, after getting shot he manages to fall down most of the mountain and then fall into a river and then over a waterfall. Afterwards he tries to dry himself off in the freezing cold and attempts some self surgery which really makes you cringe. He puts up a good performance here though of a man in agony. He runs on after further conflict with his pursuers where he pulls of a spectacular knife trick and arrives at a barn, (The barn owner is none other than the skinny pathetic guy who was the mummies renfield type person in the film The Mummy) He ...

good and evil, but with cutting edge special effects and action scenes galore this is a great film to watch.
The blu-ray version i watched was a 2 disc set with the second disc full of extras. There was a section on the history of transformers, and interviews with executive producers Steven Spielberg and Brian Goldner, writers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci, and director Michael Bay. There were also features on the animation used and the way they worked out where to do scenes. You also get a look at the military equipment seen and used in the film.
This additional information is something you do not want to skip over, because it gives you a much deeper understanding of how much planning and work went into the final production. If you are into cutting edge special effects and head banging action then beg, borrow, rent, or if that fails buy ...

Brosnan has never looked this spooked. He gets you on his side....[Neeson] gives Carver hints of a psycho drive beneath his righteous scowl. He and Brosnan are supremely well-matched foils... (Entertainment Weekly, 12/09/2008)
Its strongest element is the austere majesty of the cinematography (New York Times, 12/09/2008)
