I suppose I am the last person on earth to see this dvd. I saw it at a Jane Austen festival last year. Looking at the previous reviews, no-one's slammed it yet, so I'm happy to do the honours.
Romantic, they all say. Certainly is. It must have been so hard to resist making the standard mush when there were stars like Grant, Thompson and Winslett to make it with. But how much better it would have been if Jane Austen had been allowed to be the star. Of course I enjoyed it. It was formulated to press all the right buttons, and to appeal to the USA's ideas of what is English and what is historical; but throughout, it was missing Austen's narrative voice and wit. That is what turns the simple story: two girls, thrown on reduced circumstances, one of them too emotional for her own good, into a masterpeice. They encounter romantic misunderstandings, but the right gal gets the right guy in the end.
Significantly, the previous reviewers failed to get the real story, which is about the triumph of sense over sensibility. Not their fault, as it was barely hinted at in the film.

I have often been disappointed by screen adaptations of the classics - The BBC's adaptation of Jane Eyre similarly left me feeling cheated. I think I enjoyed the "Bride and Prejudice" Version of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" - with it's attempt to bring the situation into modern life much more than the bland, so-called period piece with the wit removed - I must admit I've only seen part of this film, on a TV when I was visiting someone, and I found it difficult to relate it to the Jane Austen story I remembered!... - ♥ - jes ≈≈≈≈{; -)-{{::::: |||||<
