Documentation.Semiconductor are artists Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt who make stunning, cutting-edge digital artworks in the form of sound-films, music videos and live animation. Guided by obsessive interests in landscape, architecture, geography, chaos / systems theory and artificial life forms, they explore the potential of the computer to unite sound and image (sounds generating and controlling imagery, and vice versa). What's revealed is physical worlds in flux - cities in motion; shifting landscapes and systems in chaos.Hugely original and immensely creative, Semiconductor approach each project from a fresh angle, always looking to extend themselves and to break new ground. They have exhibited their work in galleries, at festivals and in live / club environments; and have been awarded numerous fellowships, prizes and residencies, notably as artists in residence at the NASA Space Sciences Laboratory UCB. This DVD offers a comprehensive overview of their work over the past five years.1. Brilliant Noise.2. The Sound of Microclimates.3. Mum - Green Grass of Tunnel.4. Inaudible Cities.5. Strata.6. Advantages: Decent enough in places; Theron's wardrobe! Disadvantages: No oomph at all; more like an episode of a TV series than a film
...I've been putting off watching Aeon Flux for a while, although I'm not too sure why. It probably had something to do with the negative feedback it gained after promising so much. Adapted from a sci-fi series in the early 1990s and starring Charlize Theron, who is usually on fire on screen, I was surprised when it got slated, but last night, with the wife round at a friend's house and son William tucked up in bed, I thought I'd give it a go.
The plot is far fetched, but then it's sci-fi fantasy. In the year 2011, a virus kills 99% of the World's population. Dr Goodchild creates a vaccine, and takes the remaining 5 million inhabitants to a safe location to try and reconstruct humanity. 400 years later, the Goodchilds have continued to run the government and improve things, but now there is a small gang of fighters known as the Monicans...

Advantages: GREAT stunts and special effects, Theron looking stunning! Disadvantages: Some of the characters lack the depth that would make them engaging
...Aeon Flux
Firstly, I'll admit that I rented this film on the purely superficial and shallow basis that Charlize Theron looked brilliant in the promotional pics and trailers for this film. However, I have to say that it delivered purely as a film on its own.
STORYLINE
The storyline is not bad at all. The film is basically, a post-apocalyptic femme fatale movie. We enter a world, known as Bregna which on the face of it is Utopia, a perfect society. The film takes place 400 years into the future and Bregna is what is left of the world after a virus wiped out ninety percent of the population. Now the world is regulated by a group of scientists who descend from the scientists who cured this virus - a bit far fetched, I know. However, all is not well in this society, and Charlize Theron, plays Aeon Flux, an assassin kitted up in...

Advantages: Johnny Lee Miller back in action is about it! Disadvantages: Everything else is just cliched and awful!
...Aeon Flux started as a series of short animated episodes on MTV where a gun toting, black catsuit wearing female killed just about everyone in sight before, invariably, dying at the end of the story. This format turned out to be very successful and Aeon Flux moved on to 20 minute stories which allowed a bit more story but still pretty much followed the same idea. Bullets flying everywhere as the acrobatic woman killed a virtual army of bad guys! These were shown on BBC2 in the mid nineties I think.
Now the basic concept has been taken, enlarged (minimally it could be said!) and brought to the big screen as a live action blockbuster starring Charlize Theron as the black clad woman, now given the name Aeon Flux.
In 2011 99% of the worlds population is killed by a virus, Trevor Goodchild discovers a cure and builds a city to house...
