When ever I am looking for a decent comedy to watch I can never really go wrong with this pair, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. For some reason they just work so well together and make me laugh out loud at some of the things which they get up to.
This film see Richard Pryor playing the role of Wally Kenew who is a blind man and has been told he needs to try and find himself a job so he can gain some independence. His carer and helper take him to a small store where he meets the owner Dave Lyons, played by Gene Wilder, who is deaf and the pair somehow manage to communicate with each other and discuss the job vacancy. As this is going on a customer arrives at the store but he gets shot dead but before he is shot he places a gold coin in the tips jar.
As the police arrive the only suspects which they have are Wally and Dave but as they are blind and deaf they are not very helpful to the police and the
only clue which they have are a pair of long ladies legs and some voices. Wally and Dave are trying to prove their innocence but are relieved when they are released on bail by a very long legged woman.
Dave and Wally are on the run from the law now and are trying to track down the real killers and prove themselves innocent but do they actually understand that the killers are after them as they still have the gold coin in their possession and will they find out the truth?
I really do enjoy this film as it is very funny and has a great story. Although the story is not totally believable I can forgive this as it is put across in such a clever and funny way. The characters are all very good and I think that Pryor and Wilder do a fantastic job portraying their characters disabilities. They both work extremely well together and have a great comic timing. All of the supporting actors in the film are also very good and do their roles very well. I found that it may have benefited from a few more characters just to give the story a little more depth instead of just having it centred around the gold coin and the murder.
The setting for the film is America in the late 80’s so the clothes are very dated but this is not off putting and some of the outfits are very funny to see now. The music in the film is good if not very memorable, I do remember thinking that it was all appropriate for the places which it was used.
As I have previously said this is a very funny film and I have to say that one of the parts which really stands out for me is when the men are supposed to be having their mug shots done after they have been arrested as they are unable to both look at the camera at the same time as Wally keeps turning to look at Dave so he can see what he is saying. I think this is a very clever part which never fails to amuse me. My hubby also finds this film very funny and he is actually the one who introduced me to this pair of actors.
I will admit that this is probably not the best film I have seen this pair in but it is still a great fun film which is so easy to watch and enjoy. Personally I did enjoy their performance more in Stir Crazy.
The DVD which we have does have some bonus material which includes:-
Behind the Scenes Featurettes Filmographics Theatrical Trailer
As anyone who reads my reviews will know I am not a fan of bonus material so I have not watched these.
The film has a running time of 98 minutes which I feel is a great length as it does not drag and moves at a good pace from start to finish. The certificate on this film is a 15 as there are some scenes of comic violence, and frequent uses of bad language. I personally did not find anything offensive in this film so I would say that it is up to the parent if they feel their child of say around the 13-14 year old mark is able to watch it.
I cannot remember how much I paid for this DVD as I have had it for some time but it is available on Amazon for just a few pounds.
I am going to recommend this film as it is a good comedy which contains a great pairing in Wilder and Pryor, although maybe not their best. I will give this film a 4 star rating although hubby gives it a 5 but as this is my review then I get the final say!
