Director: Arthur Hiller Producer: Marvin Worth Writers: Earl Barret, Arne Sultan, Marvin Worth, Andrew Kurtzman, Eliot Wald and Gene Wilder. Stars: Richards Pryor, Gene Wilder, Joan Severance and Kevin Spacey.
Released in 1989 as more of a comedy than a thriller.
**BRIEF PLOT**
Wally Kerew, (played by Richard Pryor), is a blind man with a need for independence, whilst Dave Lyons, (played by Gene Wilder) is a deaf man who runs a small store and is looking for an assistant to help out. When Wally enters Dave's shop in the hope of getting the job he doesn't realise that his life is going to change for ever.
A coin left inside the tips jar causes mayhem as a customer in Dave's store is shot dead leaving the deaf and blind men as prime suspects. But with Dave hearing nothing, only seeing a long legged lady leaving the store and Wally seeing nothing but hearing the gunshot and an exchange of voices the pair must stick together to prove their innocence.
As the pair flee from the law, trying to prove their innocence by tracking down the real killer little do they realise that the real killers, Eve, (played by Joan Severance) and Kirgo, (played by Kevin Spacey), are looking for them.
The chase goes on.
**IN CONCLUSION**
Not the greatest of movies but the repartee between Pryor and Wilder can be hilarious.
For starters the interview for the store assistant is comical, with Dave being Deaf and Wally being blind, and the pair having no idea about each others disabilities, a lot of confusion is inevitable.
To be perfectly honest, when you pair a stubborn blind man and a happy go lucky deaf man in a tricky situation you are bound to come up with one or two hilarious situations, and in this film there are many.
From the start of this movie you know your going to be entertained, as you meet Wally ignoring the help from his sister as he walks around the town, his independent attitude getting him into some comical situations. Then when you meet Dave, with his laid back attitude to life and his ability to lip read, you know the movie will be at least half decent.
There is a car chase scene with a difference as the driver happens to be Wally, and his only aid is an unusually hyped up Dave…. This is side splitting part of the movie.
In fact, the entire movie is great, giving good tame entertainment and comical banter, some action and adventure, a little romance in sorts and a very good combination between Pryor and Wilder who simply make this film what it is.
Would I recommend watching this movie…? Yes, simply for the banter between the magnificent Richard Pryor and the fantastic Gene Wilder.
