a classic of its kind, it still commands attention as an appealing and often very funny curiosity. Kirk Douglas rightly earned his status as one of the titans of big-screen epic drama, so it's a surprise to encounter him in this romantic comedy as a feckless writer who can always find something to do rather than get down to work, leaving a string of outraged, frustrated or compromised secretaries in his wake. Douglas has a reasonably light comic touch and spars well with Laraine Day, in determined form as the secretary whom finally tames him and, in a notable strike for women's liberation, becomes a successful author herself in the process. But this is a film in which the supporting cast steal the best lines and scenes. Keenan Wynn is delightful as Ronnie, Douglas' neighbour and partner in the pursuit of pleasure. Some splendid high campery offers ample evidence that in a more enlightened age, Ronnie would surely have been openly gay. How else to explain his hilarious last reel marriage of convenience to the wealthy dragon of a landlady, played by the irrepressible Florence Bates? It isn't vintage screwball by any means, butMy Dear Secretaryis witty and literate enough to make you long for a revival in sophisticated cinema comedy. Truly, they don't make 'em like they used to.On the DVD:As the rush to release long-forgotten gems on DVD turns into a deluge, we will probably have to get used to the sort of disappointment on offer here: unrestored prints with no digital remastering and lousy sound quality, simply slammed onto the disc. The film could hardly be served less adequately. There isn't even any static background information on the production or the actors, making the package rather poor. --Piers Ford

Directed by Steven Soderburgh - (The Ocean films) - Starring Maggie Gyllenhaal - (Donnie Darko) - and James Spader - (Sex, Lies, and a Videotape). Secretary is based on a short story by Mary Gaitskill called Bad Behaviour. -
Set in a town in America, Lee lives a bit of a tortured life. Her mother is overprotective and her father is a hopeless alcoholic. She is witness to her parents constant arguing, and the father beating her mother up. Self harming since the seventh grade Lee finds life very difficult. She is shy, nervous, immature, and has just recovered from a nervous breakdown, and a near fatal cutting session. Newly released, after a spell in the local psychiatric institution, she is still in therapy, still cutting herself, and in a total emotional turmoil. She is attending secretarial college to take her mind off things, and to give herself something to concentrate on. Her mother discovered her self harm a few years back, and hid every sharp implement in the house, and from then on became totally over protective, and Lee doesn't have enough breathing space to recover, and grow.
One night it all gets too much for Lee and she takes her bag of cutting implements and throws them in the trash, which proves too much, and she has to retrieve them. As she is doing so she finds a newspaper with an advert in for 'Secretary wanted'. In her fragile state, she decides to apply for the job, and much to her families astonishment, she is taken on. Her interview was a strange affair, with the respective employer, being a very odd person. He too was shy, and eccentric, and he lived and worked in a weird house full of eclectic ethnic objects and furnishings. Her employer is a para legal lawyer, E. Edward Gray (James Spader), and her job will involve typing and filing for him.
On her first day she begins to realise that this is no ordinary employer, and as time progresses, the demands placed upon her, and the strange occurrences during working hours in the office, both delight and disturb her. The atmosphere between these two is highly sexually charged, and erotic. An ideal job I'd say ;) But the set-up shows signs of falling apart, when their strange Sado/Masochistic working relationship takes a turn for the worst.-
I liked this film. I thought it was both, fun, and intriguing. Some of the scenes may shock, but as this is done in pure black comedy style, the film gets way with it on all levels. The strange dysfunctional relationship between these two is believable, as it is shown as a form of love story, rather than just sexual perversity. The film starts at some point well into the story, and resorts to flashback almost immediately. The opening sequence is a nice bit of 'tongue in cheek' with Lee parading around the office in strange S&M attire, with surreal clips of her doing office duties whilst under a 'definite handicap', and all this set to the rhythm and drone of Leonard Cohen music. This opening scene sets the tone for the film. Maggie Gyllenhaal is brilliant in the role of Lee, and plays her part with the fragile, disturbed quality needed for the character of the shy and submissive Lee. She seems as if she is going to implode at any minute. She is a mass of contradictions, and she is totally out on a limb.
There is so much built up tension within this character, bubbling away under the surface, and Maggie portrays this very well. Her cutting herself is her only escape from going mad, the release it gives her is evident to see, and you feel huge empathy as she cuts deep into her skin. She has a boyfriend from college as part o the sub plot, but he is no match for her, and doesn't have any idea of the depths of the woman, and you feel he is only there as a comparison. Her father is a hopeless alcoholic who drinks to blot out the responsibilities of life, and who beats her mother to take away the feelings of his own inadequacies. Lees main problems come from the unhappy home life she has had, and work is a real escape from all of this.
Mr Gray, her employer has very few social skills. In fact it is a wonder he has any business at all, as he doesn't like to see, or speak to anyone. Being painfully shy and introverted, he conducts his life and work within the four walls, rarely leaving his home. He has a permanent 'secretary wanted' sign outside his office lit up with lights, and he changes his secretary regularly. Dimming the lights as he does so. This should be a warning sign to Lee, but she is very grateful to have been offered the job, and she does all she can to please him, and he does expect rather a lot.
There is a turning point early on in the film when Mr Gray asks Lee to retrieve some important papers he has thrown away in the trash, knee deep in a rubbish skip, she is quite happy, and does not question him at such an extreme request. James Spader is very convincing as the sexually perverse employer. The subdued but loaded atmosphere between the two of them is acted out well, and he plays the part of the sexually repressed and masochistic Mr Gray brilliantly. I can't help but draw comparisons between 'Sex, Lies, and a Videotape' when viewing his character, it really is very similar. James Spader was obviously the first choice for the part, as he plays these complicated, sexually disturbed characters very well. For the most part the film is a two hander, with other smaller cast performances at the start of the film mainly.
Secretary is classed as a comedy, though I wouldn't exactly call it that. It has it's moments, but all in all in comes across more of a drama/black comedy, or drama/romance. It's a bit unique really, and you would have to view it to see what I mean. The film handles the rather unusual aspects of sado/masochism well, and portrays this erotic sexual preference with a humour. Spanking taken seriously just doesn't work too well on film, and rather than being titillating, it's more of a snigger inducing moment. I loved this film. I liked the love story within it. Acted brilliantly, with good use of music and colour, this is a film I can watch over and over. -
Running time 104 mins BBFC Rating 18 as it contains strong sexuality.

Advantages: A truly original love story played out by very talented actors Disadvantages: You may fancy a quick spank afterwards
...this is not the first secretary Grey has nurtured this kind of relationship with; and that his behaviour hasn’t always been motivated by love.
Lee’s desire, her active pursuit of this treatment, even after Grey has backed off, goes a long way to assuage our fears. As does her development from an awkward child dressed in an ill-fitting blue bridesmaid’s gown or purple hooded poncho into a vision of glamour, poised and polished like a 1940’s starlet. ... ...and throw away the implements she uses to hurt herself, it allows her to be free and become a woman. It is also important to realise that this is only one part of the love that is growing between these two misfits. A man, who is aroused by receiving a dead worm in the mail, is clearly meant for the girl who was aroused by sending him a live one the day before.
Interestingly enough the plot follows a fairly typical romantic comedy pattern. I’m not ...

What follows is an exciting and frightening journey through the psyche as Lee and Grey find their way through the minefields of sex, love and relationships a little differently than most.
Given the way this film is advertised and summarised, it's easy to write it off as some sort of S&M porn comedy. What it turns out to be is a sensitively directed, beautifully acted and skilfully ...

...confidence enough, to become a secretary to a very peculiar lawyer, E Edward Grey.
Things there are fine to begin with, although you must take into account that "fine" is just relative, and not at all normal. She battles with water fountains, a one-man legal show that has the most unusual seating arrangements for reception, and which relies on a single old manual typewriter. And, of course, with Edward.
Throughout the next one hour fifty we see ... ...giving up the self-harming.
Secretary is one of those category-defining films that American independent cinema can sometimes manage to provide us. It is a love story, it is a satire about romances at work, and about work in general, but it is also a story of a young woman's maturation into empowerment. As Lee gets involved in this relationship, we see hers and Peter burgeon yet stall, and we see Lee blossom.
Yet the character of Lee left a bit ...

...and I must admit that Secretary is one of those. Directed by Steven Shainberg and based on the short story Bad Behaviour by Mary Gaitskill, my first reaction when I watched this film originally (I was still in my "I love James Spader" phase) was that it was just another strange kinky drama that James Spader seemed to specialise in at one time. And I had always viewed Maggie Gyllenhaal as an actress who played characters who were slightly odd. And ... ...wrong. In fact on the first watch I must admit I was quite disappointed by the film. It wasn't sexy, there wasn't enough naked James Spader and it wasn't even funny and for an erotic black comedy I would have expected it to be. But then last night I watched it again and have to say that having seen all the "erotic" bits once and discarded them as not worth watching again I actually started to see this film for what it really is - an unusual but touching ...

Advantages: A different perpective on romance Disadvantages: The DVD exta's are a little dull
The Secretary - A unique and adventurous film, designed to give the viewer a romance from a different angle.
Of course, S/M is certainly an important factor in this film, but it isn't what the film is all about. To say it was a film about S/M would be missing the point entirely.
It is a beautiful love story, of being different, being accepted and acceptance of oneself. Of two people finding their way together in a world where it is so easy to lose ... ...Lee Holloway, played by the fabulous Maggie Gyllenhaal, has lost her way. Life hasn’t been easy for her due to family circumstances, and she has headed down the wrong paths. Lee isn’t a bad person by any means, she is just a person with many issues, who has not yet discovered who she really is.
Cutting and burning herself is just her way of releasing all the pent up pain inside. It is the only way she knows, and even after rejoining her family following ...

The supporting cast are excellent in this dvd, Christopher Walken is great as always in his role as Treasury Secretary William Cleary but for me the star is Isla Fisher as Gloria, she has certainly come a long way from her days in Home and Away and her role as the slightly unhinged Gloria is great. One scene in particular will leave the men watching grimacing in sympathy pain with Jeremy. Jane Seymour plays Kathleen Cleary, William's wife and Claire is played by the very attractive ...

DVD Description
The masochist says to the sadist, "Hurt me." The sadist replies, "No." Everybody's happy. This strange balance plays heavily into the Steven Shainberg-directed SECRETARY, based on a short story by Mary Gaitskill. Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a troubled young woman with a secret, destructive addiction fueled by her mother's overprotectiveness and her father's alcoholism. Sheltered and wholly dependent on other people, Lee's only form of self-expression is in this private, painful habit. That is, until she meets her new boss, the lawyer E. Edward Gray (James Spader), who hires her as his secretary. It is exciting for Lee to hold down a job, even if she is a basket case in the office. Mr. Gray watches Lee, studies her, and slowly begins to correct both her typing errors and her personality flaws. At first Mr. Gray's dominance appears scary and overbearing, a true threat to Lee's naive, fragile psyche. But as the film carefully develops these unique characters, revealing their odd strengths and weaknesses, it becomes delightfully clear that Lee and Mr. Gray can genuinely help each other. SECRETARY is a bright, atmospheric movie that shines a light on the "fun" in this dysfunctional relationship, while using brilliant performances by Gyllenhaal and Spader to illustrate the benefits of sadomasochistic love.
