Al Pacino is a favourite actor of mine. Maybe it's his acting skills, maybe it's just because he's Italian, maybe it's the fact that he smoulders his way through films, either with love scenes (especially when younger) or with barely controlled anger (a la The Godfather series). Either way, I don't believe I can think of a single bad film that he's made.
Sea of Love is no exception.
Set in New York, this is a film that kind of falls into the "Basic Instinct" category, with the female being the central criminal figure. Co-starring alongside Ellen Burstyn, Al plays a cop on the search for a serial killer. This is a killer who is murdering their victims when they've responded to adverts placed in the Lonely Hearts column of the newspapers. The victims are men. The suspect is Burstyn. The fact that over the course of the film, he's falling in love with the luscious Ellen, a devoted mother who, in turn, is living with her mother due to the recent break-up of her marriage, leads to some rather obvious complications.
The film is an entertaining mix of a gripping thriller and a gently humourous love story.
John Goodman makes an appearance as Pacino's sidekick, and he helps add a little sparkle of reality to their relationship as cop buddies. Watch out for the scene with the two of them in the restaurant, after having placed the bogus advert in an attempt to smoke out the murderer. Goodman sets himself up as the Waiter whilst Pacino takes on the role of the Lonely Heart-ee. It's funny, well-observed humour, and introduces Burstyn to Pacino without her realising that he is a policeman and she's under intense interest. He needs to woo this shoe shop manager in order to be able to get evidence and nail her. If you'll pardon the expression.
The characters are well-written and believable, and more than a little of this is due to the combined acting talents of Pacino and Burstyn. The chemistry certainly seems to be there, (and they're both roughly of the same height, which must have relieved the diminutive Italian enormously).
Whilst not an absolute classic, this is definitely enjoyable viewing and I've watched it 3 or 4 times when it's been on satellite tv, so it does have 'legs' to a certain extent.
Advantages: Ellen Barkin looks nice Disadvantages: Very average story and performances
This is a completely unmemorable movie. Al Pacino plays a cop who falls in love with a suspected serial killer who finds victims through lonely hearts pages. Pacino plays a cliched disgruntled, alcoholic who has trouble with stable relationships. When I was watching this film, I felt as if I was just going through the motions of watching another average crime thriller of which there are many better to choose. Compared to any other Al Pacino crime ...

The Making of Sea Of Love -
Harold Becker gives us an insight into the production of the movie, revealing a third was filmed in Toronto instead of New York, to keep down cost. The script had been lying around for a while before being snapped up. It only got the green light when Pacino began toshow interest. Although, Becker briefs us on how the casting was done, we don't get any insight from the actors themselves which is disappointing.

Advantages: Well it's Al Pacino Disadvantages: but not his best film
good points - a nice twist to the ending and especially the delectable Ellen Barkin who has some seriously smouldering screen presence to her role as a maneater - this is by and large Al getting ready to put on slippers and nightgown as he settles into a role he would duplicate many times over in the 90's and beyond, that of the world-weary cop with issues.
I got this DVD for exactly five hundred pence from HMV. You, dear reader, can purchase same online but don't break the bank for it. Pacino plays this role better in that acting masterclass with De Niro and Kilmer that we know as Heat.
The song featured in the film is Sea Of Love itself, an old hit by vocal group The Twilights, covered in the 1980's by erstwhile Led Zep cohorts Robert Plant and Jimmy Page on their 1984 "Honeydrippers" set. I'm sure you will all ...
