Among a plethora of medical dramas Scrubs stands out, because its set in the US, and unlike ER it is a comedy, and when it started House and Greys Anatomy hadnt started.
Series one introduces us to the First Year Interns at Sacred Heart Hospital. John Dorian Medical Intern, usually known as JD, though he is variously called Bambi, or girls names by other members of staff. JD is the main character, we see most of the day to day life in the hospital through his eyes and it is his internal monologues which guide us throughout the series. He lives with his best friend Turk and their dog Rowdy (who isnt alive but dont tell JD).
Turk is a surgical intern, he seems like a stereotypical surgeon/jock but like the other characters he has depths yet to be revealed, many of which are shown in his developing relationship with Carla.
Elliot Reed, is a neurotic, clumsy medical Intern, she comes from a well off family and feels pressure from them to make a success of herself. Though she annoys almost everyone she come in to contact with she has a heart of gold and generally wins them around eventually.
Carla Espinosa is a nurse at Sacred Heart she works on the medical wards with JD and Elliot and her initial dislike of Elliot is eventually overcome. Series One also shows the development of the relationship between her and Turk. The other nursing staff around Carla feature but in most cases are only as a foil for her sassy latina attitude.
Dr Cox is JD's adopted mentor, he finds the interns very annoying but is willing to help and teach in his own way, a run in with his ex wife shows a softer side but he soon covers this up again, he insists on calling JD by a random girls name everytime he is annoyed by him (which is often). Cox likes to keep his work outside of his homelife and is seen as insular.
Dr Kelso is Chief of Medicene at the hospital, set in his ways he scares most of his staff and terrifies the interns, only Cox seems to not be scared of him, finding ways to annoy and bring him down.
The Janitor, takes an instant dislike to JD and spends alot of his time winding him up, feeling that somehow the Interns think themselves above him and JD is his chosen target.
Other characters are very much peripheral, patients come and go, some to return at a later date.
Through the first series you get to know the characters quite well, there backstory's are told enough to give them a 3 dimensional feel. Comedy moments which fail are few and far between thanks to well put together set pieces and a decent script. Of course the style of comedy wont suit everyone, personally I love it but my sister loathes it.
With a running time over 4 discs of 500 minutes watching this set will take quite along time to watch. The bonus features found on the fourth disc comprise the usual cast interviews, blooper reels, and scenes cut from the shows. The features dont add much for the casual viewer but as always the bloopers are quite amusing and the scenes cut can add to some of the plots in ways you wouldnt have expected them to, equally if you have an interest in the actors behind the characters then the cast interviews will be of interest to you.
Costumes and sets are brighter than the average medical show and there are plenty of scenes set outside the hospital to give you a feel for the characters social interations.
In the sales Ive found the set for around £20, but usually it will cost nearer £30, though online as always good deals can be found on second hand sets.
