Its been a long time coming but scrubs has finally made it onto TV this hilarious Emmy award winning show is one of the best things currently coming out of the American comedy market.
Scrubs is made by touchstone television and broadcast in the US by NBC, which has just started screening Season 5, it is the brainchild of Bill Lawrence (creator of Spin City). The series follows the life of new medical intern John J.D. Dorian (Played by Zach Braff) as he struggles to cope with the real life hospital after his years of medical training at college. Other main cast members are JD's flatmate and jock intern surgeon Chris Turk (Donald Faison) who is the cool guy, and Elliot Reid (sarah chalk) one of JDs fellow medical interns. Dr Perry Cox (John C McGintley) is JDs mentor in the hospital and, although he has a tough outer shell that produces some of the most hilarious comedy monologues on tv he becomes a father figure to JD, then there is nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes) the latino nurse who looks after the interns and fixes their mistakes, the devil in disgiuse otherwise known as Dr Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins) the cheif of medicine at Sacred Heart hospital and last, but not least, JDs tormentor, known only as "The Janitor" (Neil FLynn)
In this first season of scrubs the interns have to come to terms with their first everything about being a young doctor, injecting their first live patient, performing their first surgery, dealing with their first death, and the chaos that ensues is truely hilarious. The series revolves around JD and the veiwer can hear his thoughts which adds a whole new level to the show and makes its all the more hilarious when u see JD deliberately disobeying what his brain tells him to do.
The show, being a medical comedy ahs to deal with certain issues that are no the nicest but somehow manages to tread the fine line of funny and decent very well and includes many very moving scenes which provide a stark contrast and really, for me, sets the series apart from other comedies.
The humour in scrubs is very abstract, but still in your face, there are many "family guy" style dream sequences where JD visualises crazy thoughts that he has.
Scrubs can be bought from most major DVD outlets for about £25 and comes on 4 disks, the fourth disk includes a wealth of special features on the cast, the crew, the concept of scrubs and many outtakes of both the actors messing up and scenes that were deleted as there was not enough space in the show to include them.
It is possibly one of the funniest shows in the US at the moment and is a definite must for all those seeking a new fresh comedy.
