I think I watched the whole thing in a weekend, and couldn't stop talking about it for the rest of the week.
I now have all 4 series as part of my own collection, and it's definately my goto show when I'm bored and there's nothing on telly.
I always try to sum up the style of a show to someone who hasn't seen it by comparing it to other shows. For Scrubs I find it very original, I've not seen anything that compares very closely. Some aspects are familiar, such as the main character's constant voiceover narration of his own life (the Wonder Years did this, though it's much less annoying). He's clumsy and gets distracted by daydreams and hallucinations (reminiscent of Ally McBeal but actually funny, however these comparisons do not do Scrubs justice. There's a wealth of physical comedy mixed in with some hilarious one liners, and some great acting make it one of my favourite American comedies ever. My only negative is, as usual with American shows, there are some popular references that as a non American, I don't really get, though it doesn't detract that much from the overall effect.
The show is based in Sacred Heart hospital and centres on the antics of, and interractions between, the frankly crazy staff of the hospital. Series 1 follows 3 newly qualified doctors, John Dorian, Elliott Reid and Chris Turk, a surgeon, as they feel their way into their new roles under the tutelage of Dr Cox, an egotistical alpha male.
Dr John Dorian (Jd) played by Zach Braff. JD is the show's main character, and most episodes begin and end with a voicover intro and summing up by JD. The main things to know about JD are he's the geekiest geek in the history of television and his biggest motivation is trying to impress his mentor Dr Cox, who refuses to show him the respect and love he so craves. He's an extremely talented but nervous resident, and he falls over a lot. His best friend and roommate (since college) is Dr Chris Turk played by Donald Faison. In this show, some schoolyard similes are used, and in particular, the hospital's surgeons are portrayed as the jocks. Turk plays up to this typical image, but we gradually learn there's much more to his character as his relationship with JD reveals, as well as his blossoming romance with nurse Carla Espinosa played by Judy Reyes. Carla is an experienced nurse who helps out the newbies through their difficult first few months. She looks after them, and through her established relationships is able to protect them from some of the very worst of the torment of Dr Perry Cox played by John McGinley. He's an angry, egotistical maniac, whose talent as a doctor is only surpassed by his talent for self destruction. He's secretly proud of JD and although he's rude to everyone and constantly calls JD girls names (a different one for each episode) morally, he can't help doing the right thing, and he's genuinely in medecine to help people, which sort of marks him out as the hero. A passion for monologues and consistently brilliant performances make him the true star of the show, despite JD clearly being the main character. The final principal character is Dr Elliott Reid, played Sarah Chalke. She is a neurotic, obsessive flaming hot babe, who is the object of JD's affections for most of the first 3 series, and her relationship with Carla, and growth as a person and a doctor is another of the continuing plot lines through the show's history.
Scrubs not only deals with the funny side of medicine, there's a lot of emotional stuff in there to keep you thinking, while some of the other characters such as Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins), the hospital's devil incarnate chief of medicine, the Todd (Robert Maschio), a sex obsessed surgeon who can bring innuendo to any situation and high fives for everything, and Janitor (Neil Flynn), an evil fellow whose only aim seems to be to torment JD, bring some extra laughs to each episode, and they always lift the mood when it gets a bit too serious. The quality of the guest stars, some well-known some not, who play some of the weird and wonderful patients, adds to the humour.
There's a freshness about Scrubs which makes it one of the best shows to come over the pond for a while, and this DVD has a few extras to make it even better. The director's and actor's commentaries are, as always with these things, a little dry, though do contain some interesting insights. There are a couple of little features such as a music video, and some alternative lines (some funny, some not) and deleted scenes. Also the actors talking about each other can be quite interesting. Bearing in mind that almost the entire cast barring John McGinley were virtual unknowns, the quality of performance and chemistry between the characters is very good, which I suppose is a tribute to the directors on the show. The writing is a little patchy, though by that I mean that some episodes are laugh out loud funny (something I almost never do) and some are merely very funny.
Overall this is one of the best new comedies I've seen in ages, with likeable characters, excellent writing and a sharp edge to the whole thing. The extras make it an attractive DVD offering and at the price is decent value for money too. Summary: Overall this is one of the best new comedies I've seen in ages
Advantages: some genuinely funny moments Disadvantages: a little bit overly moral at times
In the past month I have returned home from university, and instead of looking for a job, I have decided to spend my time slobbed out in front of my television. Hey, I'll look for a job after graduation, honest. So, in accordance with this new daily routine I signed up with one of those online DVD rental companies, and added the first series of 'Scrubs' to my list.
'Scrubs' is one of those programs that I've always watched, but not regularly. I ... ...anything like that, but if I come across it whilst channel-hopping then I'll stop and watch it. So I figured it was the perfect thing to add to my DVD list.
The Series 1 DVD is spread across 4 DVDs, each one having 7 episodes on, apart from the last one, which just has 3. Each episode is about 25 minutes long, same as most other American sitcoms. The series is set in a hospital, and although this is not an unfamiliar setting when it comes to US ...

...a plethora of medical dramas Scrubs stands out, because its set in the US, and unlike ER it is a comedy, and when it started House and Greys Anatomy hadnt started. Series one introduces us to the First Year Interns at Sacred Heart Hospital. John Dorian Medical Intern, usually known as JD, though he is variously called Bambi, or girls names by other members of staff. JD is the main character, we see most of the day to day life in the hospital through ... ...us throughout the series. He lives with his best friend Turk and their dog Rowdy (who isnt alive but dont tell JD).
Turk is a surgical intern, he seems like a stereotypical surgeon/jock but like the other characters he has depths yet to be revealed, many of which are shown in his developing relationship with Carla.
Elliot Reed, is a neurotic, clumsy medical Intern, she comes from a well off family and feels pressure from them to make a success ...

...hospital.
The humour in Scrubs comes from the way the story is told - through the mind of J.D. The viewer is often offered JD's thoughts on various subjects as a series of literal interpretations of metaphors and such, with the end result being highly enjoyable comedy. Bit part players such as The Todd (Rebort Maschio) and The Janitor (Neil Flynn) provide us with their fair share of comedic moments. The Todd's embarrassingly constant sexual innuendo ... ...some deleted scenes and outtakes. Scrubs can be bought at most retail outlets for £25. It's definitely worth the money as Scrubs is, in my opinion, the best thing on TV at the present time. I have the first three seasons on DVD and, despite numerous viewings, they still provide laughter at all the right times. Thoroughly recommendable and enjoyable. ...
